About this item

This beautiful cabinet is from Shanxi in central China, circa 1850 and is a great example of the stunning, painted cabinets that were produced there for many centuries.

As the name suggests, often this type of cabinet was presented as part of a wedding dowry along with silks and other fineries inside.

It is in its original red lacquer finish, with thick layers that have worn in parts to the show the dark wood beneath and has been more recently updated with a glossy clear varnish along with new hardware.

The original gold paintings on the doors depict beautiful landscapes of trees and buildings, with floral motifs on the bottom fixed panel. The gilt paintings (known as 'miao jin' in Chinese) nicely remain, though have degraded in parts to show just the the dark base below.

There are two removable inside shelves that have been added, along with a removable board to access a hidden compartment behind the lower panel.

This would make a stunning statement piece in a large reception room or living area.
