An antique Victorian military campaign chest in pine with a beautifully weathered patina and tons of traditional sought after features including striking, original owner's, hand painted name and address details to front face. With dovetail joints, ornate moulded kickboard, inlaid lid with moulded lid surround, robust steel reinforced corners and chunky hand forged steel handles. Featuring authentic hand painted white military text to front face preserved on original black paintwork 'Dr. MacQuaide. Georgetown. Demerara.' Underneath the text you can just make out the previous owner's name in faint white lettering 'Capt. Waters A.O.D England.' Very old, stunningly beautiful chest with tons of history.

The British Medical Journal of 1918 records that Dr. T. B. (Thomas Bennett Wilson) MacQuaide was working at the Public Hospital, Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana in 1917 when he admitted a patient who was later discovered to have no spleen. The only information about Capt. Waters that we can find is that the A.O.D was either the Army Ordnance Department or the Advanced Ordnance Depot (from the Royal Anglian & Royal Lincolnshire Regimental Association Lincoln Branch list of abbreviations for the British Army).

Carefully refurbished, lightly sanded, cleaned, conserved and wax polished. Featuring knots and quirks, grains, textures and tones for a rustic, tactile finish. Interior cleaned, conserved and wax polished retaining original plank base and large industrial steel chest hinges.

DIMENSIONS (cm): L 108 x H 49 x D 59

NOTABLE QUIRKS: Paint remnants. Shrinkage gaps. Old holes from previous fixings. 2 of the base planks have been replaced with reclaimed timber. Some of the original kickboard and lid surround has been replaced using the salvaged base timbers and hand moulded to match the originals. Woodworm to the base, resulting in some heavy wear to base exterior, fully treated with a 3 in 1 treatment. 2 new base runners have been fitted to elevate off the floor. Newly fitted steel lockable lid stay. Lid planks at back left corner are slightly warped and raised creating a gap between the lid and the base.
