About this item

A truly beautiful piece of design and engineering from the past, this lovely Underwood No 5 typewriter looks stunning and is a joy to type on. Colourful graphics and black shiney casing - this machine has been given an overhaul, complete with new black/red ribbon. Great vintage condition, showing some signs of wear and light rust here and there, but amazing given its 100 year life!

The Underwood No 5 is the most successful typewriter ever designed and was created by German-American inventor, Franz X Wagner. The typewriter got its name from John T Underwood, who bought the company fairly early on and had been supplying ribbons and carbon paper to the industry.

These classic iconic machines appeared shortly before 1900 and within 20 years almost every typewriter imitated the Underwood. The No 5's were used by secretaries, journalists, government officials and writers throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The company was eventually bought by Olivetti, and in the early 1960s, the name "Underwood" finally disappeared from the typewriter world.

A great opportunity to own a piece of history, but also so great to use - I love typing on these!
