Antique French Clock. Louis XVth style, burl walnut veneer with ormolu mounts, two train, spring driven, mantel clock, unsigned, made in France, circa 1890-1900.
Shaped burl walnut veneer, in a waisted mantel clock case with ormolu mounts along the edges. there is a leafy gilt finial at the top with foliate forms flowing down the side edges of the case while the clock rests on ormolu decorated, flared acanthus leaf feet. A fenestrated brass cover at the back provides access to the movement compartment. The back of the case is fully veneered (a sign of French manufacture rather than Swiss or German). Dial: White porcelain dial with bold Roman hours, closed minute ring with the outer dial marked with Arabic numerals placed every five minutes. The dial is linearly divided into twelve segments. There are French steel "Roman" hands. A small Brocot aperture sits at the twelve for altering the speed of the movement. Movement: Round solid brass plate movement connected with tubular pillars which are pinned at the back plate, anchor escapement, steel cut pinions, steel arbors, no evidence of an outside countwheel (makes this movement post-1880 at the earliest). Short pendulum rod with attached brass bob would hang from the pendulum support seen at the upper end of the back plate and slip through the fork-like crutch (seen in photo). The movement is spring powered, of eight-day duration, while striking a coiled Cathedral gong on the hour and half hour. The movement appears to be unsigned.
In very good condition with age cracks seen in the veneering at the top of the case and along its back edge. Ormolu mounts are in very good condition as is the white enameled dial. No fractures of the dial are noted. Working order, would benefit from being serviced.
