Antique clocks for sale at Vinterior
Antique clocks for sale at Vinterior are varied in style. From ornate brass or gilt antique wall clocks to charming grandfather clocks and sleek antique mantle clocks, there are many to choose from. French antique clocks tend to be among the most lavish when considering decorative detail, occasionally featuring figurines and other intricate neo-classical details. British antique clocks, by contrast, prefer a more simple aesthetic, elevating simple curving contours and metallic trimming, like our collection of 1930s mantel clocks.
How to choose between different styles of antique clocks
Many of the clocks with which we are most familiar qualify as antiques - if original, of course. One timeless style is the camelback antique clock, which sits on the mantelpiece with a graceful arch. Typically made from richly coloured wood such as rosewood or walnut, this antique clock is finished with an elegant brass trim around the clock face. Other well-known antique clocks include grandfather and cuckoo wall clocks.
The history of the antique grandfather clock
Where did this antique clock pick up its grandfatherly nickname? Some believe that it was the popular 1876 song ‘My Grandfather’s Clock’ that coined the term for the longcase clock. Who was behind the song? It was composed by an American songwriter called Henry Clay Work who discovered a long grandfather clock in a Durham hotel, whilst travelling through England. When Henry enquired about the grandfather clock, he was told that it had two owners. The clock had started chiming out of time when the first owner died and when its second owner passed away, it stopped working altogether! This is what inspired him to pen the loved nursery rhyme.
