Description

A hard to find set of six high back Cesca chairs by Arrben of Italy. Manufacture stamped. Super condition. Fabulous room presence. Dated 1975 to 1985, estimated.

The Cesca chair is a chair design created in 1928 by the Hungarian-American architect and designer Marcel Breuer. It consists of a tubular steel frame and a rattan seat and backing. The design was named as a tribute to Breuer's adopted daughter Francesca (nicknamed Cesca).

Breuer’s most defining design, the Cesca Chair, has gone down as one of, if not the most influential chair of the last century, and has become a hallmark of industrial modernism. Also known as the B32, we’ll cover the Cesca Chair in much more detail

Breuer’s Early Life

Born in Pecs (once part of Austria-Hungary, now southern Hungary) near the Danube River on 21st May 1902, Marcel Lajos Breuer showed a flair for creativity and artistic design from an early age.

After graduating from school, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna to study painting after being offered a prestigious scholarship. However, it soon became clear to the young Marcel that his true passion was ignited in architecture rather than painting.

After only a few weeks, Marcel quickly left the art academy, instead deciding to begin an apprenticeship with an Austrian architect before moving on to join the cabinetmaking studio of the architect’s brother. It was here that Marcel learned the basics of cabinetmaking and was able to develop his manual labour skills and refine his raw talent into finished products.

By 18, Marcel was already making circles in the design world and continued his rapid progress by enrolling at the prestigious Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany (founded in 1919 before moving to Dessau in 1925). Head architect Walter Gropius immediately recognised Marcel’s natural talent and promoted him to the head of the carpentry shop within his first year.

Marcel’s time at the Bauhaus resulted in him being influenced by many artists and designers of the period, who also worked and taught at the art school. These included notable names of the era, including Paul Klee, Josef Albers, and the world-famous Russian abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky.

By the mid-1920s, Marcel had finished his course studies at the Bauhaus and began to be self-sufficient through selling his own furniture designs. An early example of this was the Wassily Chair, which he designed and released in 1926.

The first-ever chair to sport a bent tubular steel frame, the Wassily (originally the Model B3 Chair) marked a turning point in modern furniture design - its radical shape was a predecessor to the Cesca Chair, which came two years later.

Unsurprisingly, and testament to the highest regard that Marcel held him in, the Wassily was named after Wassily Kandinsky. This chair’s design has remained virtually unchanged since its inception and is still highly popular today.

At the time, Marcel described the Wassily chair in these words:

"It is my most extreme work both in its outward appearance and in the use of materials; it is the least artistic, the most logical, the least 'cosy' and the most mechanical."

Despite Marcel deriding his own artistic style, the Wassily is now regarded as an icon of modernist design and even has its own entry in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. That counts as pretty artistic in our book!

The Cesca Chair

1928 was a pivotal year for Marcel. After establishing himself as a world-class cabinetmaker, this was his moment to make a mark on the furniture design world forever.

The Cesca Chair (affectionally named after Marcel’s adopted daughter Francesca – nicknamed Cheska) was unveiled by Marcel that same year. Famed for its striking cantilever design and bleeding-edge modernist aesthetics, the Cesca was the first tubular-steel frame chair with a cane seat to be mass-produced. Just like the Wassily Chair, an original example takes pride of place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Heavily influenced by the Bauhaus during Marcel’s earlier years, the Cesca Chair was once described by Cara McCarty (former associate curator of the Museum of Modern Art) as “among the 10 most important chairs of the 20th century”.

Further glowing endorsement has also recently come from Christopher Wilk (curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London):

“There had never been a chair like it. It was structurally daring and embodied many key aspirations of modernist design that were equally applicable to architecture and furniture”.

“It was made of an industrial material symbolic of the machine age and was visually transparent because materials were reduced to a minimum, giving it an abstract quality.”

Although celebrated throughout its entire lifetime, the Cesca was especially popular during the 1970s, where it expertly blended the fluid bohemian hippie trend with clean, architectural structure.

Breuer’s later years

Later Years

In later life, Marcel turned more attention to his architectural work and even collaborated on projects featured at the Pennsylvania state exhibition hosted at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York.

Marcel became increasingly influenced by the US as he entered the twilight stage of his career, moving permanently to New York City in 1946. During the fifties and sixties, some of the architectural designs he turned his hand to include the Sarah College Theatre (Bronxville, NY), De Bijenkorf Department Store (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and the Atlanta Central Library.

Retiring in 1976, Marcel was deservingly awarded the prestigious Grande Medaille d’Or by the French Academie of Architecture.

Marcel passed away in 1981, but his legacy certainly lives on. His most famous works continue to be mass-produced worldwide today, his Wassily and Cesca Chairs being his most notable posthumous best-sellers.

One trait that marked Marcel out as a pioneer in the design world was his enthusiasm for developing and utilising new materials and technologies. As a result, he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of modernist theory. His buildings and furniture designs will continue to echo his unique take on cabinetmaking and architecture for generations to come.

His Cesca Chair has been spotted in various films and tv shows over the years, including Pedro Almodovar’s ‘Julieta’, ‘The Nest’, ‘Fosse/Verdon’ and even Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’. It’s quite the star of the silver screen!

We hope that you’ve enjoyed our description and that you’re learning something new about this iconic furniture designer that we’re proud to promote at Rudolph Black via Vinterior.

Condition report:

Structure A1.
Chrome A1 save for some minor imperfections.
Frames A1 save for chips and knocks you might anticipate. No nasties.
Rattan is very good except a total 3 or 4 very tiny minor superficial breaks of circa 2/3 mm in non support areas. It took a great deal of study to find these tiny breaks under the workshop lights. I very much doubt they will be visible to the untrained eye, even under close inspection.

Cancellations and Returns

Our Terms of sale were designed to treat both Customers and Vendors (including Professional Vendors and Non-Professional Vendors (as defined in the Site Terms)) fairly, in order to make the shopping/selling experience with Vinterior just as exceptional as the items.

We've extended our usual return period for the holidays. Any purchases made in December 2023 on gifting items can be returned up until 31 January 2024.

To protect our Customers from disappointment or the unexpected, we strongly encourage them to closely inspect item photos, descriptions, and details before purchasing anything on the Site, and then again upon delivery or pickup.

If the Customer is unsure about an item's condition, dimensions, quantity, or description, they can send their questions to the item’s Vendor by clicking on Ask the seller on the listing page of the Site.

Customers shall receive the same level of consumer protection on purchases irrespective of whether they are buying from a Professional Vendor or Non-Professional Vendor.

Should you have any questions regarding your transaction, please contact the Vendor in the first instance.

Can I cancel an order?

If a Customer changes their mind or decides for any other reason that they do not want to purchase the Goods before the Goods have been dispatched, they can cancel the order on the Site and receive a refund.

The right to cancel does not apply to the following types of Goods, which are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to the customer’s specific requirements. If in doubt, the Customer can contact the Vendor via the Site.

If the Customer cancels an order after an item has already been marked as dispatched for delivery, the costs of delivery are non-refundable.

To cancel the order, the Customer must follow the cancellation procedure on the Site by clicking on Create Cancellation on the order page.

Can I return an item?

Consumers based in the UK and European Union can request to return the Goods on Vinterior up to 14 days after the Goods have been received. Once accepted, the buyer is in charge of the shipment and should organise it as soon as possible (except in the case of a return of faulty Goods).

To initiate a return, the Customer must click on Create a return on the order page on the Site. In the return request, the reason for the return must be included along with photos of any damage of the Goods, if faulty.

As with cancellations, the right to return an item does not apply to the following types of Goods, which are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to the Customer’s specific requirements.

Additionally, the Customer may not return an item for "inaccurate listing” reason when its dimensions or other characteristics do not fit its requirements. We strongly recommend that buyer measures all access areas prior to making a purchase.

If in doubt, the Customer can contact the Vendor via the Site.

In case of a return, the costs of delivery (i.e., outbound delivery costs when Goods are sent from the Vendor to a Customer) are non-refundable.

The Customer is responsible for organising the return of Goods and for paying delivery costs. Once the item is returned to the Vendor in the same condition, the Vendor will confirm receipt and refund the Customer. If an item is returned to the seller damaged, or in an unsuitable condition, Vinterior will not be able to process the refund and the seller may have to send it back to you (and ask you to cover the delivery costs). All items are inspected on return.

Acting under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, customers may return faulty Goods that are damaged in transportation or the listing on the Site is materially inaccurate, misleading, or misrepresents the Goods. In these cases, the Customer must provide photographic evidence to Vinterior and the Vendor or reject the delivery on arrival.

In case of damage in transit for all items, Vinterior must be informed. Vinterior will then raise an insurance claim on behalf the Vendor with delivery company Proovia. Once the claim is resolved and any relevant decision regarding the insurance has been made, any applicable refunds will be processed.

Please note that vintage items are not sold as new and are likely to show signs of wear and tear. This is not sufficient grounds for a refund.

Vendors may refuse a return of an item if it has been altered by the Customer in any way.

Neither Vinterior nor the Vendors are liable for any damages or loss sustained in transit via third parties.
