Description
This exceptional Antique Turkish Kilim Rug from the 1880s is a rare and highly collectible flatwoven masterpiece, showcasing centuries of tribal weaving tradition. Rich in multicolour tones of navy, red, terracotta, brown, mustard, gold, and deep blue, this handcrafted wool rug features a bold geometric pattern with diamond medallions, zig-zag stripes, and symbolic tribal motifs. As a large handmade area rug measuring 355 x 229 cm, it is perfectly suited for spacious living rooms, dining rooms, studios, office interiors, and homes seeking a statement piece with cultural depth and vintage character. The combination of colour, craftsmanship, and traditional flatweave texture makes this rug an ideal choice for bohemian, rustic, eclectic, and traditional décor styles.
Origin & Heritage: This antique kilim was woven in Turkey in the late 19th century, reflecting the artistry and symbolic language of traditional Anatolian weaving. Rugs of this era were created by skilled tribal artisans who passed down motifs and weaving techniques through generations. The geometric medallions, star patterns, and stylised tribal shapes are characteristic of historic Anatolian and Central Asian weaving traditions. As an authentic 1880s textile, this rug holds significant heritage value and is sought-after by collectors of antique handmade rugs, tribal flatweaves, and museum-worthy textiles.
Style & Design: The rug’s design is dominated by repeating geometric panels arranged in a symmetrical flow, creating visual rhythm and balance. The multicolour palette is both bold and harmonious, blending earthy tones with rich jewel-like colours that add depth to any interior. This piece works beautifully in boho chic spaces, rustic farmhouse décor, eclectic homes, and contemporary interiors that welcome colour and pattern. Its large size makes it ideal as a living room rug, dining room centrepiece, office statement carpet, or artistic floor feature in open-plan spaces. The traditional geometric design also makes it a strong match for ethnic décor, southwestern styling, and global-inspired interiors.
Craftsmanship & Material: This rug is entirely handwoven using natural wool on a strong cotton foundation, resulting in a durable and flexible flatweave construction. Handmade wool rugs from this era are known for their longevity, natural stain resistance, and breathable texture, making them ideal for both decorative use and everyday living. Each motif is woven by hand, demonstrating precision, patience, and an intimate knowledge of traditional textile techniques. This is not a machine-made rug — it is a genuine artisan-woven heritage piece crafted over 140 years ago.
Décor & Usage: Because of its large size and strong visual character, this antique kilim is perfect as a living room centerpiece, a dining room area rug, a feature carpet in an office or creative studio, or a statement rug in a bedroom or library. It suits interiors wanting warmth, colour, and authenticity, and is especially popular among collectors of bohemian décor, tribal rugs, geometric carpets, and vintage textile art. The rug’s colour palette allows it to complement wood furniture, neutral interiors, modern minimalist spaces that need texture, or colourful ethnic-inspired décor.
Care & Maintenance: This wool flatweave is naturally durable and easy to maintain. Regular low-suction vacuuming preserves the texture, while occasional rotation ensures even wear. Wool’s natural oils help resist stains, and any spills should be gently blotted and not rubbed. Professional rug cleaning is recommended every few years to maintain freshness and preserve the colours. With proper care, this antique Turkish wool rug will continue to age beautifully and remain a treasured piece for decades to come.
Why You’ll Love It: This 1880s Turkish Kilim Rug is more than a floor covering — it is a rare antique, a handwoven artwork, and a timeless piece of cultural heritage. Its bold colours, geometric patterning, and authentic tribal craftsmanship make it an extraordinary addition to any home. For buyers seeking a large handmade rug, a collectible antique textile, a multicolour geometric kilim, or a vibrant centerpiece for a large room, this rug delivers depth, beauty, and enduring value.
