Elio Martinelli (1921–2004)

Elio Martinelli was an Italian designer from Lucca, Tuscany, whose work helped define the look of postwar Italian lighting. Trained in scenic design and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he initially worked in his father’s lighting business before branching out on his own.

His design approach was rooted in simplicity, geometry, and nature-inspired forms, while embracing new technologies and materials. In the 1960s he became one of the first Italian designers to experiment heavily with plastics like methacrylate and ABS resin, which allowed for futuristic shapes that metal or glass couldn’t easily achieve.

Martinelli’s lamps—such as the Serpente (1965), the swiveling Cobra (1968), and the mushroom-like Model 625 (1968)—exemplify the organic yet rational aesthetic of the Space-Age era. His designs are now regarded as icons of mid-century Italian lighting, combining sculptural presence with everyday functionality. He continued designing into the early 2000s, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and experimentation.

Martinelli Luce

Martinelli founded Martinelli Luce in 1950 in his hometown of Lucca. The company quickly became a laboratory for bold, modern lighting design, balancing technical lighting systems with expressive domestic pieces.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, Martinelli Luce established itself as a leader in the Space-Age aesthetic, thanks to Elio’s own designs and collaborations with figures such as Gae Aulenti (creator of the Pipistrello lamp, produced by Martinelli Luce), Marc Sadler, and Karim Rashid in later decades.

The company’s philosophy has consistently emphasized functional simplicity, modular forms, and innovative materials. Today, Martinelli Luce still operates under the Martinelli family, producing both reissues of classics (like the Serpente and Cobra) and new designs, continuing the experimental spirit Elio established.
