Description
Coupè or 3320R arched floor lamp with hemispherical lampshade in white lacquered aluminium, stem in chromed metal and base in white lacquered aluminium. Designed by Joe Colombo and produced by Oluce in the 1960s. The Coupè lamp is adjustable in height thanks to the black handle on the stem, furthermore the lampshade can be adjusted in its inclination and the base is shaped to adapt perfectly to the wall. Height: 175 cm Width: 140 cm Lampshade diameter 40 cm Lamp base 30 x 32 cm Joe Colombo, born Cesare Colombo, was an important Italian designer, architect and artist. Renowned for his embrace of modern technologies and the potential he saw in furniture and modular designs, Colombo created a series of furnishings that spoke to the energy and excitement over the potential of the Space Age. Colombo was born and raised in Milan. For the first time Joe decides to pursue an artistic career by enrolling at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. But after a couple of years at the Academy, he moved to the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he studied architecture and graduated in 1954. During his studies at the Academy, he befriended the artists Sergio Dangelo and Enrico Baj, who had been influential in creation of the avant-garde of the Nuclear Movement, a group whose aim was to transform pictorial art in response to the tensions of the modern nuclear age. Until 1958, Colombo worked mainly as an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor and was nourished by the energy and intensity of the Movimiento Nucleare group, which fueled the fascination of an almost futurist aesthetic in his work. In 1959, Joe Colombo's father died and he decided to run the family appliance business by experimenting with new manufacturing methods and materials. This new and unexpected experience pushed him to move from painting to architecture and design, where his fascination for futuristic themes not only remained intact, but found a new and stimulating home. In fact, one of his first design projects was a series of installations made with televisions assembled in the shape of a sanctuary; the work was exhibited at the Milan Triennale in 1954. In 1962 Colombo decided to open his own design studio in Milan, entering the most intense phase of his career: he designed furniture, lighting, interiors and glass objects. Also in 1962, Joe and his brother Gianni designed the Acrilica lamp for Oluce, an elegant and innovative table lamp that used a curved acrylic connected to the light source and which embodied the sensitivity of the time. In addition to numerous architectural projects, Colombo has lent his design expertise to several now-iconic furnishings, such as his No. 1 chair. 4801 produced for Kartel (1963-64),which consisted of three pieces of plywood inserted into each other; the iconic Elda chair, made of fiberglass and 7 tubes of leather sheaths, dedicated to his wife Elda and produced for Combort F.lli Longhi (1963); the Additional Living System produced for Kartell (1967), a modular and versatile design created from individual slices of padded metal and foam that could create different seating arrangements; and the Tubo lounge armchair produced for Capellini (1969), constructed from a series of tubes and which helped ensure Colombo's status as a leading figure in modern Italian design.
