Description
A delightful and very attractive brass coal scuttle or log box, used for storing coal beside the hearth. It is a gorgeous antique piece which has a rectangular, sloping-front design typical of late 19th–early 20th century. There is a decorative border around the front panel which looks a little like an embossed beaded border - it is classically typical of Victorian homeware which had a neoclassical influence.
There is a wonderful, albeit slightly rusted, maker's mark on the scuttle. I think it reads W Harris & Co, but I can't be sure. This mark shows it was made by a quality manufacturer, very likely from Birmingham or Sheffield in late 1800s. Harris & Co. supplied many major London and provincial retailers, including ironmongers and department stores. Their pieces are known for solid brass construction, ornate moulded detailing, and high-quality finishing, often stamped discreetly on the base or interior.
There is a wonderful turned handle at the top with ornate brass supports. The handle appears to be black painted wood or could be ebonised. It is a perfectly gorgeous and functional addition to carry the piece. There is a rear brass pocket perfectly neat and designed to take a shovel - the shovel is black, matching the handle and has ornate detailing to its handle. It is in great condition and so super to find the bucket and spade still as a pair!
The lovely little bun feet are brass too - as is the little round knob on the front panel. On the inside of the scuttle is the original coal bucket with both its handles for ease of removal. In good condition, although like all inside liners it does carry some wear. Still very usable though.
Overall this wonderful very old antique brass piece has natural verdigris patination (green oxidisation on brass), confirming genuine age and solid brass construction. I have simply wiped this piece over and have not attempted to polish or wax it. I leave the antique items as they are for the buyer to finish how they choose. There are as you would expect general signs of age and wear on the scuttle and shovel, and some rust on the lining.
This is very British made in the latter few years of the 19th century. These were additions to well appointed Victorian homes - once used for coal in a front room or bedroom, they can now be vintage accent pieces or can be used for kindling, small logs, coal or just fire bits. Wonderful attractive but not too fussy piece for a traditional modern interior.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.
To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.
- Pickup arranged for you
- One clear fee, no surprises
We coordinate the return with either the seller's chosen courier or our trusted delivery partner.
All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.
- For smaller or parcel-sized items, you can choose to post the item back yourself using a tracked service, or the seller can suggest a preferred courier.
- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.
- Return delivery costs vary depending on size and courier.
The seller will confirm the best option based on the item.
3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.
- Let us know as soon as possible (ideally within 72 hours of delivery) so we can resolve things quickly
- Share photos so we understand what happened
- We’ll help arrange a return and refund if needed

4. What can't be returned

Returns are completed smoothly once the pickup is arranged.
7. Refunds
Once the seller receives the piece back in the same condition it was sent, we'll issue your refund to your original payment method.
Once a refund is issued, it may take up to 5–10 working days for the funds to appear back on your original payment method, depending on your bank or card provider.
If the item is returned with new damage that wasn't present at delivery, the refund may be adjusted following review.
