Description
This early twentieth century brass fireplace fender or fireside curb is a beautifully balanced piece of hearth furniture that combines quiet elegance with practical purpose. It has the kind of mellow aged brass tone that only develops over decades, producing a soft golden warmth that feels far more authentic than a highly polished surface.
The brass has been left in the condition it was found, allowing the natural patina and gentle wear to give it a relaxed and very contemporary look. What was once the domain of endless polishing with Brasso has now become the sought after aesthetic for fireplace accessories, where age, softness and authenticity are far more appealing than bright reflective shine.
Across the centre of the fender runs a pierced decorative band which provides the key visual feature. The pattern forms a repeating symmetrical design made up of small stylised leaf and floral shapes arranged into a rhythmic lattice. The pierced cutwork creates a subtle play of light and shadow through the openings while still feeling restrained and refined. It is decorative without being over elaborate, giving the fender character while keeping the overall look clean and uncluttered.
Above and below the pierced band the brass surfaces are plain and smooth, which frames the decoration nicely and allows the pierced pattern to stand out. The overall shape of the fender is gently curved so that it follows the natural line of a fireplace opening. This soft curve also gives the piece a pleasing sense of proportion when viewed from the front, creating a graceful line rather than a rigid straight form.
The fender stands on three claw shaped feet which project slightly forward from the base. These feet add a touch of classical character and lift the piece just enough to give it presence on the hearth. They provide a sturdy base and visually anchor the fender, adding just enough decorative detail without making the piece feel overly ornate.
As is typical with many antique fireplace fenders the centre section curves very slightly inward. It is difficult to say whether this was an intentional design feature or simply the result of decades of people resting their feet or knees against the brass while sitting by the fire. Either way it remains structurally strong and stable and is a common characteristic seen on many surviving examples of this type.
Behind the brass curb sits the original metal tray which forms the practical element of the piece. This platform provides a place to rest fire irons and other fireplace tools while also acting as a catch for any stray pieces of coal, wood or ash that might roll forward from the fire. It makes the fender both decorative and genuinely useful as part of a working fireplace arrangement.
The structure is solid and the piece sits firmly on its claw feet. It is a wonderfully versatile fireside accessory that would work equally well in a traditional period interior, a mid century or retro setting, or even a more contemporary space where the aged brass finish adds warmth and texture around the hearth.
