Product Details

Description

An age-worn attractive antique Arts & Crafts style brass fireplace fender, also known as a fireplace kerb, beautifully hand-worked and rich in period character. This is a traditional hearth piece designed to sit in front of an open fire, framing the fireplace opening while providing both decorative presence and practical protection. Its low, linear form grounds a hearth visually and gives a fire setting a sense of completeness that modern reproductions rarely achieve.

If you like perfect, look away, the charm and exuberant character of this fender are the wearing of time, its life and the glorious aesthetics of distressed.

Formed from brass rather than copper, the surface has a warm golden tone that has deepened and mellowed naturally over time. The metal has been hand-hammered, creating a softly dimpled texture that catches the light in a subtle and irregular way. Applied riveted decoration runs along the front, with roundel-style studs arranged in stylised floral and scrolling motifs typical of late Victorian to early 20th century Arts & Crafts influence. The design is restrained yet characterful, balancing simplicity of line with hand-crafted detail.

The brass has developed a natural aged patina with areas of darkening, oxidation and tonal variation across the surface. There are deeper honeyed areas alongside softer, muted sections where the metal has gently dulled with age. This variation gives the piece depth and authenticity, far removed from the uniform shine of modern polished brass. It has not been aggressively cleaned or over-polished, and retains its original mellowed surface.

A wonderfully evocative fireside accessory, ideal for a period home, cottage interior or townhouse with original features. It would sit beautifully against stone, brick or tiled hearths, and could equally be repurposed as a decorative architectural element or wall-mounted feature for those who appreciate antique metalwork with authentic surface and history. This is a piece with genuine age, texture and presence, offering the craftsmanship and material integrity associated with the Arts & Crafts tradition.

Condition report:

Condition reflects honest age and long use at the fireside. There are surface dents, small perforations in places, and historic marks throughout, all entirely consistent with a genuine period hearth fitting. The edges and joins show age-related wear and slight movement, but the structure remains intact and stable. These signs of use speak to decades of service and add to its atmospheric quality rather than detract from it.

The decoration to the fender is somewhat mixed and altered over time. Originally it would have been fitted with a symmetrical arrangement of brass studs, but over the years some have been lost, some appear to have been repositioned, and others have lost their brass caps. Interestingly, this has revealed the underlying floral metal bases in places, which are actually quite attractive in their own right and add an unexpected layer of detail to the piece.

There is also a split running along the top edge which has been repaired at some point in its life. The repair appears secure and stable, and is consistent with the kind of maintenance often carried out on working fireside pieces that saw regular use.

There are numerous images, so please check over the condition.

This has been a great experience all round. I am really pleased with the music chest which is in great condition - I am delighted that all the special drawer mechanisms still function so smoothly. The seller kept me fully informed re delivery and the courier was polite and helpful, giving me his eta and carrying the furniture into my living room for me. Would not hesitate to recommend this seller.

I received a beautiful mirror from Christpher. It was even better than I had hoped, and it arrived extremely well wrapped and boxed, Great care had been taken to protect it. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from him again. Christopher also replied promptly to my emails. Thank you Christopher, great service.
