Product Details
Description
Indulge in the timeless elegance of this antique Wedgwood light blue jasperware round plaque, exquisitely modelled with the classic white relief of “Cupid Stringing His Bow”. Beautifully presented in a vintage circular wood frame, this piece showcases the refined craftsmanship and romantic neoclassical style that made Wedgwood famous across Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
This highly collectible plaque is a superb example of early Wedgwood jasperware, with crisp, raised white decoration against a soft light blue ground. The subject of Cupid, poised as he strings his bow, is a beloved Wedgwood motif, symbolising love, beauty, and classical mythology. It is a piece that sits comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors, adding a touch of sophistication wherever it is displayed.
Key Features:
- Authentic antique Wedgwood blue jasperware plaque
- Classical white relief of Cupid Stringing His Bow
- Mounted in a vintage circular wood frame
- Marked “WEDGWOOD” on the reverse
- Estimated date: late 1700s to early 1800s (c.1800)
- Elegant decorative piece and highly desirable for Wedgwood collectors
Condition:
The jasperware plaque itself is in excellent antique condition. There are no cracks, chips, repairs, or structural damage visible, only minor age-appropriate wear consistent with careful display over two centuries. The antique wood frame shows some visible signs of age and use, including light wear and surface marks, which are typical for a piece of this period and add to its authentic character.
Dimensions (approx.):
- Overall framed diameter: 17 cm
- Plaque / sight area diameter: approx. 6 1/2" to 6 1/8"
Markings & Period:
The plaque is clearly stamped “WEDGWOOD” on the reverse, indicating authentic manufacture by the renowned English pottery firm founded by Josiah Wedgwood. Based on style, colour, and marking, this example is attributed to the late 18th to early 19th century, around c.1800, a highly sought-after period in Wedgwood production.
Why This Piece Stands Out:
- Desirable subject: Cupid is one of Wedgwood’s most charming neoclassical figures, appealing to collectors of mythology, romantic art, and fine ceramics.
- Classic colourway: The light blue jasperware with white relief is the quintessential Wedgwood combination, instantly recognisable and highly decorative.
- Display-ready: Already mounted in its vintage wood frame, this plaque can be hung or displayed immediately, making it ideal for interior decorators and collectors alike.
- Investment-quality antique: Early Wedgwood jasperware from circa 1800 continues to be prized for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and enduring beauty.
Ideal For:
- Collectors of Wedgwood jasperware and English ceramics
- Lovers of neoclassical and Georgian-period decorative arts
- Interior designers seeking a refined, romantic focal piece
- Thoughtful gifts for weddings, anniversaries, or special occasions
