Description
A well-proportioned late Victorian mahogany tilt-top table, offering a refined interpretation of earlier Georgian tripod forms. The oval top, finished with a subtle thumbnail moulded edge, provides a softer and more elegant alternative to the more common circular examples, lending the piece a slightly more decorative presence.

The table is raised on a distinctive open reed column, formed from applied carved elements surrounding a central structural shaft. This creates a sculptural, almost birdcage-like effect—purely decorative rather than structural—reflecting late 19th century craftsmanship and the period’s interest in reinterpreting earlier furniture forms.

The tilt-top mechanism operates via an original brass snap catch, allowing the top to be raised when not in use. Below, the tripod base is formed from shaped cabriole legs, each featuring recessed carved reserves, adding subtle depth and visual interest. The overall silhouette is balanced and elegant, with a warm, mellow tone throughout.

A versatile piece, ideal as a wine table, lamp table, or occasional side table, equally suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Late Victorian, circa 1890–1910

Styling Suggestions
Perfect beside a sofa or armchair as a refined lamp table, or used as a compact drinks table. Works particularly well layered with textiles, ceramics, or a single sculptural object to highlight the column form.

FAQ
Q: Does the table rotate as well as tilt?
A: No, this example tilts only and does not rotate, using a brass snap catch mechanism rather than a traditional birdcage system.

Q: Is the column structural?
A: The central support is solid, with the open reed elements applied decoratively around it.

Unique Points
Unusual open reed column design
Oval top form (less common than circular examples)
Original brass tilt mechanism
Strong decorative presence with practical function
