Description

A stunning early 20th-century Anglo-Indian brass tray table, dating from around 1910–1920, featuring a deeply hand-engraved brass top and an elaborately carved hardwood folding base. This exceptional piece embodies the artistry and craftsmanship of the British colonial era, where Indian and Middle Eastern influences merged in decorative furniture design. These brass topped tables are also known as Benares tables - I believe.

Likely from the 1910–1920s, the table is very much in an Anglo-Indian / Moorish Revival style. It has strong Egyptian and Indo-Islamic decorative influences. The carved base is wonderful. Detailed, intricate, eye catching. The top tray has the wonderful very detailed etching in it - it is solid brass, hand-etched with concentric geometric and calligraphic motifs inspired by Egyptian and Islamic art.

Hand-carved dark hardwood (possibly rosewood or teak), intricately turned and pierced with spindle lattice panels and floral motifs. Likely made in Northern India (Rajasthan or Kashmir region) for export to Britain or Europe, during the height of colonial decorative arts trade.

The brass tray lifts off the wooden stand and can be used separately as a serving tray. The folding base features ornate spindle-work and turned ball details, providing both elegance and portability — a hallmark of Anglo-Indian craftsmanship of the period.
Can be used as an occasional table (as per its original purpose) but is also sturdy enough to use as a permanent table - just be mindful that if knocked the top may come off.

Very good antique condition overall with signs of age, wear and use all commensurate with being an antique and a much loved and used table. The brass top retains a rich, warm patina with minor age-related marks and a couple of very small edge dings. The wooden base is strong and stable, with some gentle wear consistent with age and no structural issues. As an fyi I could spy one small vertical spindle is missing on one side - hardly noticeable but I did include in the photos. The base folds neatly for storage. The wood has been cleaned but has not been stained or repolished etc for authenticity and for your own desired finish.

A beautiful piece but sadly had a leg which was broken probably during transit which will require repair. Would recommend the seller.

A really lovely plant stand. I was going to use it in the garden but think it will be staying inside instead. :)
