Product Details

Description

A substantial and wonderfully characterful Victorian walnut pedestal desk dating from around 1870, constructed in the traditional manner as a three-piece desk with a removable top and two separate pedestal bases, allowing it to be moved and installed far more easily than its impressive proportions might suggest. With a faux red leather writing surface, solid appearance and rich colour, it possesses all the qualities buyers seek in a genuine nineteenth-century desk, whilst retaining the honest wear and evidence of use that only a piece which has served generations of owners can acquire.

Unlike heavily restored examples, this desk presents exactly as one would hope from a piece that has spent over 150 years in active service. It is structurally sound throughout, stands firmly on castors, and remains entirely practical for everyday use. The proportions are excellent, offering a generous working surface together with an abundance of drawer storage. Whether placed in a study, library, office, country house, period property or retail setting, it has considerable presence and the sort of authenticity that cannot be recreated artificially.

The desk retains its original brass handles throughout, all of which are present and intact, a feature increasingly difficult to find on desks of this age. The locks are also present, although no key accompanies the desk. The three frieze drawers beneath the writing surface are all in good order and run smoothly. The pedestal drawers also operate well, opening and closing as they should. Internally, the drawers are clean and usable with the expected signs of age, including historic ink stains and marks that speak to decades of practical office use. These traces of its working life add greatly to its character and authenticity.

The original red leather writing surface remains in place and displays mature age-related wear, scuffs, marks, abrasions and areas of deterioration acquired through generations of use. The decorative gilt border is still visible and frames the leather attractively. While the leather is certainly well worn, it contributes enormously to the desk's appearance and provides exactly the sort of mature patina that collectors and interior designers often seek. This is not a desk that requires cautious preservation; rather it is a desk that invites continued use without fear of adding the first mark.

The top appears to be of solid mahogany construction and remains structurally sound. Around the outer edge there are various signs of age and use, including veneer losses and areas of wear that are clearly visible in the photographs. To the left-hand side of the top there are patches of veneer missing, while further losses can be found towards the front left corner and in two noticeable areas towards the front centre edge. These imperfections are immediately apparent on close inspection but do not detract from the desk's strength or usability. Instead they contribute to the honest and untouched appearance that distinguishes genuine period furniture from over-restored examples.

The left-hand pedestal displays further evidence of its long life. The middle drawer has a section of veneer missing below the left-hand brass handle and there is wear consistent with generations of use. At the base, the plinth has an old loss which has been stained in at some point in its history, together with several smaller losses towards the right-hand side of the plinth. These are cosmetic issues rather than structural concerns and sit comfortably within the overall presentation of the piece.

Within the kneehole area there are various marks, scuffs and indentations, almost certainly caused by decades of feet resting beneath the desk or by items being stored underneath. Such signs are entirely consistent with the age and purpose of the piece and serve as a reminder that this was a working desk rather than a decorative object. To the top of the left-hand side, you will also see some sun bleaching.

The right-hand pedestal is generally well preserved and remains complete, showing the expected wear and tear associated with age but without any major issues. The colour and patination remain attractive and blend well with the rest of the desk. The rear of the desk is particularly pleasing and unusually presentable for a piece of this type. As a result, it would sit very comfortably in the centre of a room rather than needing to be placed against a wall, making it suitable for use as a freestanding partners desk or centrepiece office desk.

Overall, this is a genuine, mature and highly decorative Victorian pedestal desk that has earned every mark, scuff and imperfection through a century and a half of honest use. It combines excellent proportions, practical storage, original fittings and strong visual appeal with the rich patina that only age can create. Buyers looking for a pristine, restored example may wish to look elsewhere, but for those seeking an authentic nineteenth-century desk with warmth, character and a story to tell, this is exactly the sort of piece that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

This has been a great experience all round. I am really pleased with the music chest which is in great condition - I am delighted that all the special drawer mechanisms still function so smoothly. The seller kept me fully informed re delivery and the courier was polite and helpful, giving me his eta and carrying the furniture into my living room for me. Would not hesitate to recommend this seller.

I received a beautiful mirror from Christpher. It was even better than I had hoped, and it arrived extremely well wrapped and boxed, Great care had been taken to protect it. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from him again. Christopher also replied promptly to my emails. Thank you Christopher, great service.
