Description
This is a beautiful early twentieth century mahogany desk or table, almost certainly Continental European rather than British in origin. The construction and proportions suggest a refined European workshop tradition, with a focus on symmetry, weight and restrained decorative elegance. It is made to a very high standard, with thick, solid timber, strong joints and a reassuring weight that immediately conveys quality.
The legs are particularly elegant. They are finely shaped and taper gently downward, giving the piece a poised and balanced stance. Each leg has a subtle curve that softens the overall form, avoiding heaviness while still retaining strength. The shaping appears carefully hand finished, with smooth transitions from apron to leg and a confident sense of proportion. The feet are neatly finished and grounded, allowing the table to sit firmly while maintaining visual lightness.
The legs contribute greatly to the aesthetic, giving the piece a refined yet practical presence.
The top is substantial and solid, fitted with a later leatherette-style vinyl writing surface. This covering rises occasionally slightly toward the outer edge, creating a gentle framed effect that defines the working area. The surface is practical and protective, making it well suited to writing or office use while preserving the underlying structure. The edges are clean and well defined, giving the table a composed and formal appearance.
There are three drawers beneath the top. The central and left hand drawers show markings to the base consistent with a previously used piece of office furniture, adding to its authentic character. The right hand drawer is notably clean and retains evidence of former drawer dividers, suggesting organised storage for writing instruments or paperwork. The drawers run smoothly and retain their original drop brass handles, which add warmth and period charm. The brass has a soft aged tone that complements the richness of the mahogany.
The drawer fronts are veneered in a decorative pattern. The veneer appears to be bookmatched, where two consecutive slices of timber are opened like a book and laid side by side to create a symmetrical mirrored grain pattern. This produces a flowing flame or feathered effect across the surface, enhancing the visual depth and movement of the wood. The veneer is carefully aligned to emphasise balance and harmony, adding subtle sophistication without excessive ornamentation.

Condition is very good overall. The structure is solid and the timber remains rich in tone. There is a small piece of wood missing from the beading at the top of the central drawer, which is minor and does not detract significantly from the overall presentation. The piece remains highly usable and structurally sound.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.
To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.
- Pickup arranged for you

We coordinate the return with either the seller's chosen courier or our trusted delivery partner.
All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.
- For smaller or parcel-sized items, you can choose to post the item back yourself using a tracked service, or the seller can suggest a preferred courier.
- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.
- Return delivery costs vary depending on size and courier.
The seller will confirm the best option based on the item.
3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.
- Let us know as soon as possible (ideally within 72 hours of delivery) so we can resolve things quickly
- Share photos so we understand what happened
- We’ll help arrange a return and refund if needed

Once a refund is issued, it may take up to 5–10 working days for the funds to appear back on your original payment method, depending on your bank or card provider.
If the item is returned with new damage that wasn't present at delivery, the refund may be adjusted following review.
