Description
Belarti Belgium designed this elegantly crafted Mid-Century Modern coffee or side table in the 1960s. This cocktail table has a striking ceramic tile top with beautiful butterflies and birds that creates a beautiful contrast with the stylized tree branches. The frame and legs are made of wrought iron with a black patina. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner. The coffee table is in good condition, with minor wear to the ceramic tiles, no crack, no chip and no repair.
Note: Who was Belarti? It's still not completely clear! Many sellers confidently claim that these tiled coffee tables were created by a Belgian artist known as Juliette Belarti or Julien Belarti. It seems that this person does not exist. The name is a short anagram for "BELgian ARTIst" and was coined by Julien de Covemaeker (1927 - 2008), a ceramist who had a ceramics and furniture studio in Ostend, Belgium. To begin with, there are several indications of a production that is quite similar yet has a different signature. Belarti is found in lowercase or uppercase letters (Belarti or BELARTI). Because different spellings appear to have been used, it is not unlikely that several people or artists signed with this name. Sometimes 'Belarti' more or less changes into 'Bel Arti' or simply 'Arti'. In addition, some pieces are signed "J. Belarti" and others with "Belarti" alone or also with "JF Belarti." Productions signed by J. D'asti, Adri or De Nisco also show many similarities with the creations signed by Belarti. Finally, adding to the confusion, there are tables in Perignem, Belgium, with the same structure but whose ceramics are signed by Yves Rhayé. However, many experts think that Belarti is probably a collective name used by various artists for a typical ceramic production of the 1960s. Thanks to Spacevintageretroblogspot, interesting information was found on a page of the Belarti catalog from 1968. It is explained that Belarti was a limited liability company, founded in May 1968 in Mechelen, Belgium. The company was a grouping of various ceramists.
Extracts of the catalog page (translation from the original Dutch language): "And in May 1968, the N. V.* Belarti was founded, which enabled further development of what can be best described as a traditional production. Production is increasing, but everything is still handmade, and industrial counterfeiting is out of the question. To take up artistic expansion, the manufacture of all kinds of original objects in earthenware, which started in 1962, was also used in 1969 by the n. v. Belarti. Slowly but surely, foreign buyers are attracted by the originality and quality of Belarti creations. The studio has transformed into a company of international stature. The small oven of pioneer times has turned into fully automatic equipment of bulky ovens. Despite the rapid expansion and fame, we still have our first customers who remained loyal throughout the company's evolution and became true friends. Thanks to them, with their knowledge of sales, we are now able to present a renewed collection here in this catalog. N. V. J. Belarti Mechelen - Belgium." * The N.V. company is the Belgian equivalent of a public limited company, and the abbreviation comes from the Dutch name "Naamloze Vennootschap."
