Description

Final Reduction 04/11/25
A pair of vintage A.H. McIntosh of Kirkcaldy modular teak wall units, dating from the late 1960s/early 1970s. Each unit features a combination of open display shelving, sliding door cupboards, and deep drawers with McIntosh’s signature square recessed handles. Designed in the Danish modern style, the units balance functionality with clean-lined elegance, making them ideal for use as a living room bookcase, dining storage, or display cabinet. The rich teak grain and modular construction reflect the quality craftsmanship for which McIntosh is renowned.

Although no Manufacture’s badge is evident, it was not uncommon especially true for modular wall systems, where several units could be combined, which these are example to.

* Era: Most likely late 1960s to 1970s. McIntosh was especially prolific during this period with Danish-inspired teak wall units and sideboards.
* Handles: The square recessed wooden handles are very typical of McIntosh designs of that time
* Construction & Finish: Teak veneer with solid teak edging — a McIntosh hallmark.
* Form: Modular shelving and storage units, often part of larger wall systems that could be combined to suit the home. The sliding doors (both top and bottom), paired with drawers, are consistent with their “Dunvegan” and other ranges.

The principal designer at A.H. McIntosh of Kirkcaldy during the 1960s and into the 1970s was Tom Robertson.
* Robertson joined McIntosh in the early 1960s and was responsible for many of the company’s most iconic mid-century designs.
* His style was strongly influenced by Danish modernism: clean lines, teak veneers with solid edging, and elegant yet practical detailing (such as sculpted or recessed handles).
* By the late 1960s and early 1970s, Robertson had led McIntosh into the production of flexible wall units and modular storage systems, which is the category for these two pieces.
* McIntosh’s reputation for high-quality Scottish modern design in this period is almost entirely credited to Robertson’s vision.

These two Mid-Century Units have been in the family home for 50 years, they are in moderate condition for the age and require some restorative work, hence the price. Blemishes are photographed with coin for scale. Additional shelves were attached therefore there are peg hole remaining in the outer ends of both units. There could be either wood filled or the units switched and therefore hiding the holes.

Each Wall Unit is two pieces, the top easily removed but also sturdy enough not to require fixings.

Each Unit is made up of:
Upper Section: H116cm x L180cm x D 28cm
Lower Section: H60cm x L180 cm x 54 cm
