Description
This is a truly magnificent piece of mid century classic kitsch furniture, the iconic Frontier ship cocktail bar. A rare and wonderfully theatrical statement piece, it brings instant mid century character with a bold nautical design, curved silhouette and glazed display section that makes it as decorative as it is practical.
The bar splits into two main pieces for easier moving and positioning. The upper section includes the surfaces and glazed display area, and the base is separate, as shown in the photos. It sits on three beautiful atomic style gold legs, which give it that unmistakable mid century lift and make it look light and sculptural despite its generous presence.
The overall colour palette is striking and very stylish. The exterior is black with pale trim, finished with gold detailing, a nautical rope feature and classic porthole styling. It has a playful cruise ship feel, but still looks smart enough for a living room, home bar corner, dining room, cocktail lounge set up, games room, studio, or even a boutique or salon display piece.
Inside, there is a shelf area ready for bottles, glasses and barware. The glazed section is ideal for showing off your favourite spirits, vintage glassware, cocktail books or mid century accessories. There is also a bottle opener fitted to the rear top left area, which adds to the authentic bar feel and makes it genuinely usable.
The portholes do not have glass, and they did not originally have glass, so this is correct to the design. There is one anchor motif on one side. There is no sign on the other side that there ever was one, so it appears to have been made that way rather than missing.
The main point to note is the small front fitting that holds the rope. The rope holder on the top section has broken and has been poorly glued in the past. I have deliberately not attempted to re glue it, as additional glue could make a proper repair more difficult. This is a straightforward project for someone who enjoys light restoration, or it can simply be left as is depending on how you choose to display the rope detail.
The rope feature does not appear to fasten into anything at the back, which seems to be part of the original design rather than a fault. The metal trim around the front edge shows a few dents in places. This is cosmetic and could likely be improved with careful attention if desired.
Otherwise, for its age, I would describe the condition as exceptionally good. It is fully intact and very well preserved, with only the sort of surface wear you would expect from a vintage piece. The black exterior has a very slight give to it, as if there is a thin sponge layer behind the finish, which adds to the original mid century build quality and feel.
There are some surface marks and light scratches to the tops and surfaces, consistent with age and use. These are visible in the photos and could potentially be improved with careful cleaning and sympathetic restoration if the buyer wishes, though many people prefer to keep the original patina.
The glass panels are mercifully still intact, which is a huge plus for a piece like this. At some point in the past, someone added a strip of beading along the bottom of the glass panels. This has since been removed, and you can see the veneer beneath where it once sat.
There is a light fitting at the top. The wiring looks in very good condition visually, however this item is sold as not working and as untested. It may simply need a new bulb or plug, but for safety it should be checked by a qualified person before use.
This is an astonishing piece of classic mid century furniture and they are very few and far between to find these days. It is the kind of bar that becomes the centrepiece of a room, and it suits mid century modern interiors, retro styling, nautical themes, maximalist spaces, cocktail culture displays, and anyone who loves rare conversation pieces with genuine period charm.
