Product Details
Description
A striking and highly collectible English Art Deco ‘rocket’ cocktail cabinet, crafted in beautifully figured flamed mahogany and dating to circa 1936. The cabinet features the iconic cylindrical form with elegant vertical fluted doors and stands on a contrasting black plinth base, giving the piece a dramatic and sculptural presence.
I was fortunate enough to own one of these remarkable cabinets several years ago and have been hoping to find another ever since. Examples of this form rarely appear on the market, so I was delighted to secure this particular piece.
The cabinet opens to reveal a spectacular mirrored cocktail interior, with curved mirrored glass panels creating a dazzling display of reflections when filled with glassware. The interior is thoughtfully fitted with a range of original cocktail features, including shaped glass holders to the doors, a pull-out serving shelf for drink preparation, and a rotating bottle stand in the lower compartment designed to hold a selection of spirits.
The mirrored upper section lifts open, allowing light into the interior while also providing improved access when preparing drinks. This section incorporates a pull-out mixing tray, offering additional working space, while the base of the compartment is fitted with a circular protective glass insert to guard against spills. A removable black bottle stand is also present within the upper section, allowing flexibility between organised bottle storage and increased open display space when required. When fully opened, the cabinet presents a theatrical arrangement of mirrors, glassware and fittings — characteristic of the finest Art Deco cocktail cabinets of the period.
The cabinet is veneered in richly figured flamed mahogany, the natural grain providing warmth and depth to the sculptural cylindrical form. As it is finished on all sides, the cabinet was clearly intended to stand freely within a room, allowing it to function as a true centrepiece rather than being placed against a wall.
This piece also demonstrates the exceptional level of craftsmanship achieved by English cabinet makers during the Art Deco period. The construction of a fully cylindrical cabinet is inherently complex, here further enhanced by vertical fluted detailing and four precisely aligned curved doors. Even after more than 90 years, the doors open and close beautifully — a testament to the quality of the original manufacture.
The cabinet has been carefully and sympathetically restored in our own workshops and is presented in excellent condition.
During restoration, the mirrored glass panels were removed to allow thorough cleaning and refinishing of the interior. Each original mirror retains its factory stamp to the reverse, including the glass manufacturer’s mark and a clearly printed date of September 1936, providing a wonderful period detail and firmly confirming the cabinet’s mid-1930s manufacture.
Designed during the golden age of cocktail culture, this cabinet remains as functional today as it is visually striking. When opened, it creates an impressive mirrored display of glassware and bottles, making it an exceptional focal point for entertaining.
A rare and highly desirable Art Deco cocktail cabinet of outstanding form and quality — increasingly difficult to source and a true statement piece for any interior.
