Description

The Camaleonda sofa is one of the most iconic creations by Mario Bellini, designed in 1970 for the company B&B Italia. This sofa exemplifies how design can be functional, modular, and aesthetically innovative, while remaining extremely comfortable and versatile.
The key innovation of the Camaleonda lies in its modular structure, which allows for the assembly of various elements (seats, backrests, armrests) into fully customizable configurations. This makes it highly adaptable to different spaces. The modularity also allows for sections to be added or removed, creating larger or more compact arrangements based on the environment and user needs.
Another distinctive feature of the Camaleonda is the use of "sack" cushions, which conform perfectly to the body. The internal structure of these cushions consists of a series of elements that provide exceptional softness and unparalleled comfort, offering a unique sense of coziness. The leather or fabric upholstery further contributes to the luxurious yet informal look of the sofa.
The Camaleonda is constructed with a metal frame and high-quality polyurethane and synthetic padding, which ensure both maximum comfort and long-lasting durability.
The name "Camaleonda" is a fusion of two Italian words: "Camaleonte" (chameleon, known for its adaptability to different environments) and "Onda" (wave, referencing the sofa's fluid, undulating cushion shapes). The name perfectly reflects the sofa's ability to transform and adapt, much like a chameleon changing color.
When it was launched in 1970, the Camaleonda was a true revolution in sofa design, challenging the norms of the industry. It was the first sofa to introduce a complex and versatile modular system, allowing not only shape variation but also adaptation to any type of space and function. This innovative approach helped establish Mario Bellini as one of the most important designers of his time.
Over the years, the Camaleonda has become a collector's item and one of Bellini's most celebrated works. Today, thanks to its timeless aesthetic and functional flexibility, it remains an icon of interior design, merging beauty, comfort, and innovation.

Mario Bellini (Milan, 1935) is an internationally renowned architect and designer, famous for creating iconic products and important buildings around the world.
He studied at the Politecnico di Milano, where he was a student of Gio Ponti, and graduated in 1959.
In 1963, he became head of design at Olivetti, where he designed the first programmable calculator, the Programma 101.
During the 1960s and 1970s, he worked as a freelance designer for companies such as Cassina, B&B Italia, and Artemide.
In 1972, he participated in the MoMA exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" with the experimental vehicle Kar-a-sutra.
From the 1980s onwards, he focused mainly on architecture.
From 1986 to 1991, Bellini was the editor-in-chief of Domus magazine.
He has also taught at prestigious institutions such as the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna and the Domus Academy in Milan.
His works are part of the permanent collections of major museums such as the MoMA in New York, which holds 25 of his pieces.
He has received numerous awards, including eight Compasso d'Oro prizes.
In 2015, the Triennale di Milano awarded him the Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement.
