Description
The Chair
This exceptional Gavina-produced Wassily chair has just arrived from Rome and is newly listed, having been sourced during our late-autumn buying trip to Italy and delivered shortly before Christmas.
Purchased just outside Rome, the chair comes from a single family of architects and has remained with them since new — a provenance that shows clearly in both its condition and its integrity. We date this example to circa 1965–1968, placing it firmly in the coveted early Gavina period, prior to the brand’s acquisition by Knoll.
This is immediately evident in the build quality. Unlike later and modern examples, this chair features solid metal end caps rather than plastic push-fit caps, correct period fixings and nuts, and a frame with superb chroming — clean, bright, and free from corrosion, rust, or pitting.
The leather is where this chair truly distinguishes itself. Thick, supple, and beautifully aged, it shows the natural grain break and stretch marking that only high-quality, full-grain leather develops over decades of use. These organic markings are not flaws but rather a clear indicator of authenticity and quality — a visual record of the chair’s life and use. The stitching is precise and intact throughout, with no loose threads, tears, or structural issues.
In overall terms, this is a first-class example: structurally excellent, visually rich, and far superior in material quality and presence to contemporary reproductions, branded or otherwise.
An Icon in the Interior
Architecturally pure yet deeply comfortable, the Wassily chair is one of the most versatile modernist designs ever created. Its sculptural steel frame gives it a striking presence in minimalist, concrete, and modernist interiors, while the warmth of the leather allows it to sit equally well within period properties, loft spaces, and layered contemporary homes.
Despite its graphic appearance, it is a genuinely supportive and comfortable chair — the suspended leather panels adapting naturally to the body. It functions as both a practical seat and a statement object, equally at home in a reading corner, architectural living space, or private study.
Minor wear consistent with age is present, as expected and desirable, but there are no structural compromises whatsoever. The condition stands as a testament to the original manufacturing standards of the Gavina era.
This is a Wassily chair that will continue to age gracefully — an heirloom-quality piece ready for its next home.
The Designer
Marcel Breuer
Born in 1902 in Pécs, Hungary, Marcel Breuer was one of the most influential figures of 20th-century modern design. A former student — and later master — at the Bauhaus, Breuer pioneered the use of tubular steel in furniture, drawing inspiration from bicycle frames and industrial manufacturing.
The Wassily chair, designed in 1925, was revolutionary: it rejected traditional upholstery and wood construction in favour of exposed structure, lightness, and function. Named later in reference to artist Wassily Kandinsky, a fellow Bauhaus figure, the chair became a defining symbol of modernism.
Breuer later emigrated to the United States, where he enjoyed a highly successful architectural career, designing landmark buildings and cementing his legacy as both a designer and architect. Today, his furniture designs are held in major museum collections worldwide and remain benchmarks of modern design.
Why Early Gavina Matters
For collectors and design purists, early Gavina-produced Wassily chairs are the benchmark.
Before Knoll acquired Gavina in 1968, production was firmly rooted in post-war Italian craft traditions, with an emphasis on material quality, hand-finishing, and longevity rather than scalability. Frames were heavier-gauge steel, chroming was thicker and more durable, and fittings were engineered to last — evidenced here by the solid metal end caps and period-correct fixings, rather than later plastic push-fit solutions.
Equally important is the leather. Early Gavina examples used exceptionally thick, full-grain hides, selected for strength and longevity rather than uniformity. Over time, this leather develops the natural grain break, stretch marking, and patination seen on this chair — characteristics that simply do not appear on thinner, corrected leathers used in later production or modern reproductions.
In short, early Gavina Wassily chairs are not just earlier versions — they are materially superior objects, made at a time when cost pressures had not yet diluted the original Bauhaus ideals of honesty, durability, and functional beauty. This is why they are increasingly sought after and why well-preserved examples such as this continue to stand apart.
