Description
A truly exceptional and wonderfully atmospheric set of four French Victorian painted salon or dining chairs retaining their original hand painted decoration and what appears to be their original velvet upholstery. These are the sort of chairs that immediately transform a room, carrying an effortlessly romantic faded grandeur that is impossible to reproduce artificially.
The frames remain beautifully preserved in their original soft sage green painted finish, enriched throughout with delicate hand painted floral decoration and surviving gilt highlights. The detailing is absolutely charming, with fine floral swags, tiny painted blooms and gilded accents still remarkably visible across the rails, uprights and seat friezes. The combination of muted green, worn gilt and faded salmon pink upholstery gives the chairs an extraordinary bohemian country house elegance.
Particularly attractive are the shaped backrests with their gently flowing lines and decorative double stretcher arrangement. The turned finial style detailing to the tops of the rear uprights adds a wonderfully refined French decorative touch, while the fluted and turned legs below further enhance the elegance of the set. The craftsmanship and decorative ambition throughout is superb.
Interestingly, there are subtle decorative variations across the set which only add to their individuality and authenticity. Three chairs retain predominantly red floral painted details, while one chair features blue detailing to the lower back stretcher and side decoration, with red accents remaining to the front. These slight differences suggest traditional hand finishing rather than factory uniformity and give the set tremendous charm and personality.
The upholstery appears to be original velvet and remains remarkably intact overall considering age. The faded striped fabric in tones of sand, muted gold and salmon pink has acquired a beautifully mellow timeworn patina over many decades, with gentle areas of darkening and age softening that speak honestly of long use and only add to the authentic shabby chic appeal.
The fabric has that wonderfully lived in country house look that designers spend fortunes trying unsuccessfully to recreate.
Condition wise, three of the seats remain close to fully intact. One chair has a red mark to the front section of the seat, while another has several small snags towards the rear right side. There is wear in varying degrees to the decorative trim hems around all four chairs, although importantly the trim largely remains present and in situ.
Structurally the chairs are very solid and surprisingly comfortable. All four retain their original sprung seats and the springs remain in very good responsive order, giving the chairs a luxurious softness rarely found in modern seating.
To the undersides, two chairs still retain their original fabric dust covers, now loose with age, while the remaining two expose the original webbing beneath where the covers have been lost over time. We would personally remove the loose undersides for neatness, though we have left them untouched for authenticity. Should you wish us to remove the remaining loose material before dispatch, simply let us know.
These chairs would work beautifully within French country interiors, shabby chic settings, boutique hotels, dressing rooms, eclectic dining spaces or refined bohemian homes. They possess that elusive balance between elegance and faded imperfection that makes genuine decorative antiques so much more appealing than pristine reproductions.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.
To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.

All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.

- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.

3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.

Once a refund is issued, it may take up to 5–10 working days for the funds to appear back on your original payment method, depending on your bank or card provider.
If the item is returned with new damage that wasn't present at delivery, the refund may be adjusted following review.
