Description

Timothy Nigel Dendy Easton was born in Tadworth, Surrey on 26 August 1943, son of Dendy Bryan Easton (13 March 1916-10 December 2001), and his wife Iris Joan née Keyser (9 November 1919-15 January 2007), who married at St Katharine's Church, Merstham, Surrey on 28 June 1941, Timothy's brother was Dendy Peter Easton (born 1 December 1950), a fine art consultant at Bonham's and Sotheby's. Encouraged by his father's passion for collecting paintings and his own keen interest in drawing, Easton decided he wished to become an artist. Educated at Cranleigh, Mowdon Hall and Christ's College, Brecon and then studied at Kingston College of Art 1960-1964 and, with a scholarship, studied at Heatherley's in London 1966-1967 from where he won an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award that enabled him to travel for a year in Italy and northern Europe. On his return to England, he began work as a portrait painter and church muralist, completing several commissions for large figurative murals, including those at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Tadworth, Surrey and the Theological College, Salisbury. He married at Richmond, Surrey in 1967, Christine Margaret Darling and had two daughters. In the early 1970s, he decided to concentrate full-time on sculpture and for the next 15 years his imaginative bronzes were featured in numerous exhibitions with solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, Germany, Luxembourg and regularly in London. A further change of direction in his career took place in the mid-1980s when, inspired by the renovation work at his new home and garden at Bedfield Hall near Framlingham in Suffolk, he returned to painting, establishing a reputation as a garden and landscape artist. His paintings were made as an evocative portrait of the historic buildings around his home, the matured gardens became the focus of many works. His knowledge of early buildings gained him a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship as an ‘artist working with architecture’ which allowed him to travel around six European countries 1998-1999 and although the greater part of his output has been produced in England, painting visits to Europe, Central America, South Africa, and India have resulted in paintings with rich colours and contrasting shadows. He has had solo exhibitions at The English Gallery, Los Angeles, USA (1981); Easton Bronzes, Burg Satzvey Castle, Mechernich, Germany (1984); Sculpture at the Art Gallery, Luxembourg (1985); Sculpture and Paintings at the Art Gallery, Luxembourg (1988); Markswood Gallery, Essex (1989); Chris Beetles Gallery, London (1990); The Cadogan Gallery, London (1991); The Brian Sinfield Gallery, Burford, Oxfordshire (1992); Bedfield Hall, Suffolk (1993-2005); Arlesford Gallery, Hampshire (1994); 20th Century Gallery, London and National Schools Regatta, Nottingham (1996); Bourne Gallery, Reigate (1997); The Museum of Garden History, London and Christ College, Brecon (1999) and Chappel Galleries, Essex (2006) and several at the John Russell Gallery, Ipswich. His book 'Oil Painting Techniques' was published in 1997 and his paintings have also featured in several other publications as well as on many greetings' cards, CD covers and prints.
