Description

"Oil on canvas FERRUCCIO FERRI - 1953 - "Boats of Syracuse" SYR EXPRESSIONIST PERIOD"
An extremely rare work by the painter Ferruccio Ferri (Fauglia 1911 - Pisa 1989) - From a private collection - This painting, dating from his Syracuse period, is signed and dated 1953. It was exhibited by the artist at the 6th Gulf Exhibition in La Spezia.

Oil on canvas, 98 cm x 73 cm.

Works by this artist are extremely rare. The canvas is perfectly sound. As no further loss of paint is anticipated, we have chosen not to undertake any restoration.

Already engaged in Fauglia, he married Sara Ughi in 1939, with whom he had two children: Laura (born in Fauglia in 1940) and Franco (born in Syracuse in 1947). In 1954, he was appointed director of the Pesaro School of Art, which would become a major multidisciplinary institution to which he dedicated twenty-two years of his life.
These were years of intense activity. He devoted himself to his school commitments, participating directly in teaching experiments in the school's many departments and specializations, often teaching students himself. He continued his personal work as a painter, participating in numerous national group and solo exhibitions, including a Venice Biennale and four editions of the Rome Quadriennale.
He received and accepted numerous ministerial assignments, including several others. In 1959, he participated in the founding of the Forlì School of Art; in 1961, he oversaw the creation and organization of the Arezzo Art Institute, which he directed during its first year; in 1962, he founded the National Art Institute of Pisa, successor to the school he had attended during his childhood, organizing its curriculum and directing it for a year. The fresco painter and adopted Syracusan, Ferruccio Ferri, born in 1911 in Fauglia (Pisa), died on May 16, 1989, in Pisa, at the age of 78. During his childhood, his first teachers were the charcoal portraitist Dogali and the post-Macchiaioli painters Francesco and Luigi Gioli. He began his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts on Via San Frediano (Pisa, 1922), a disciple of Master C. Rossi, and completed them five years later at the Porta Romana Art Institute (Florence), where he took the teaching course and, as a student of the renowned painter G. Vagnetti, met, at the "Montparnasse" house in Florence, the artists Mannetti, Pizzanelli, Viani, Tayat, Soffici, Bonfantj, MaruDe (I3rada), Andreotti, Maccari, Conti, Martini, Griselli, Papini, Rosai, Viviam, Volpi, and Pizzarello. Between the two world wars, he was very active as a painter; he won prizes twice at the provincial exhibitions of the Union in Pisa and at the regional exhibitions in Florence. His first portrait dates from 1924, followed by the Self-Portrait (1927, 1931), Sara (1929), and others. Martina (1934), My Daughter (1939), The Blind Man of Syracuse (1940), a real person. First solo exhibition at the Palazzo alla Giornata (Pisa, 1930, 1933), he participated in the Biennale (Venice, 1948) and the Quadriennale (Rome, 1951, 1955, 1959, 1965). Other exhibitions: Teatro Verdi (Pisa, from 1934 to 1939), Interreg. Exhibition (Florence, 1936), National Exhibition (Trieste, 1936), National Exhibition (Naples, 1937), Trajan's Markets (Rome, 1937), Gall. La Fontanina (Syracuse, 1946, 1963), Rural Exhibition (Catania, 1947), National Exhibition (Forte dei Marmi, 1948), National Exhibition (Cremona, 1949), National Exhibition (Siena, 1949), Fiorino Biennial (Florence, 1950, 1951), National Exhibition (Clusone, 1951), National Exhibition (Taranto, 1951), Gulf of La Spezia Prize (1953, 1955), Brera Biennial (Milan, 1953), International Exhibition (Rome, 1954), Michetti Prize (Francavilla, 1954, 1956, 1959), Comiso Prize, 1954), Promoter (Palermo, 1954), Art Exhibition (Rome, 1954), Portrait Exhibition (Florence, 1954), Marche Prize (Ancona, 1960, 1965), Gallery 11 Segnapassi (Pesaro, 1968), Papà Tanguy Gallery (Syracuse, 1969), La Molla (Pisa, 1971), Art Workshop (Livorno, 1974), Burdeke Gallery (Zurich, 1974), Municipal Gallery (Pesaro, 1975), Artecasa (Pisa, 1979), National Exhibition (Pisa, 1980), Nazi Exhibition (Cascina, 1980),Maccbi Gallery (1982), Palazzo Lazzarini (Pesaro, 1983), Palazzo Lanfranchi (Pisa, 1985).
