About the artist

Nijland was a son of Hidde Nijland (1853-1931) and Adriana Volker (1854-1937). His father was an art and antique collector and Nijland came into contact with famous names in the art world at a young age. At the age of fifteen he studied Antoon Derkinderen, followed by lessons at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid Amsterdam and the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. In his later career the poet Albert Verwey and the art critics Albert Plasschaert and HP Bremmer successively played an important role.

After his study time, he spent a few years in Paris and Brussels. Later he lived a large part of his life in Rhoon and from 1919 in Wassenaar. He had his houses designed by famous architects, that in Wassenaar was a design by MJ Granpré Molière.

In 1943 he moved from Wassenaar to Leiden, where he stayed in Huize Bloemlust with Mrs. de Groot - Feltkamp, a cousin of HP Bremmer.

Nijland could count many famous artists among his circle of friends, including the painter Paul Arntzenius, the poet Martinus Nijhoff, the critic Cornelis Veth, the writer Herman de Man, the sculptor John Raedecker, the painter Charley Toorop and the art collectors Anton Kröller and Helene Kröller -Müller, who also bought work from him.

In his work Nijland focused mainly on the accurate recording of everyday things. His special attention was the relationship between land and water, expressed in many river and port scenes. He worked a lot in South Holland and on the Zeeland islands, in places like Scheveningen, Hellevoetsluis, Vlissingen, Bruinisse and Brouwershaven. He painted and drew people there in their vicinity of the ports. His dedication was realistic, business-like and precise and with minimal use of color. His work was already highly appreciated in his time and purchased by museums early on.

Occasionally he received commissions in which his talents as a graphic artist emerged. He illustrated in 1904 a special edition by Boefje of MJ Brusse. His interest in maritime subjects was later useful for illustrations of Herman de Man’s books.

Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held in 1951 in the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, in 1968 in the Groninger Museum and in 1993 in the Drents Museum in Assen, which manages a large part of his legacy.
