"A glimpse of the Spanish coast: ‘Isla Cristina’ by Michel de Alvis, c.1960"

Immerse yourself in the essence of the Mediterranean landscape with this stunning artwork by Michel de Alvis, created around 1960. Isla Cristina captures the spirit of the Andalusian coast with a mastery reminiscent of the works of Joaquín Sorolla, Claude Monet, and Eugène Boudin. This oil on canvas, with its intimate dimensions (9.45 x 16.14 inches), offers a serene view of the Spanish coastline, reflecting the light, the movement of the water, and the warm tones of the sand with exceptional skill.

The composition combines vibrant shades of blue and gold, creating a calm atmosphere that invites the viewer to lose themselves in its contemplation. Michel de Alvis, renowned for his ability to depict urban and maritime landscapes, achieves a perfect balance between detail and emotion in this piece, echoing the aesthetics of the great Impressionists.

If you admire the luminosity of Sorolla, the atmosphere of Monet, or the coastal sensitivity of Boudin, this artwork will make the perfect addition to your collection. Its versatile size and artistic quality make it an essential piece for art and nature lovers alike.

Michel de Alvis (1936–2019) was a French painter renowned for his vibrant depictions of Parisian life and Mediterranean landscapes. Born on July 16, 1936, in Paris's 10th arrondissement, he spent his formative years in the 18th arrondissement, near Montmartre, a hub for artists and creatives. His childhood was marked by a temporary relocation to Pommerieux in Mayenne from 1940 to 1947 due to World War II.

De Alvis's artistic journey began with studies in graphic design, but he soon realized his true passion lay in painting. He pursued this interest by enrolling in various drawing and painting courses, notably studying under Daniel du Janerand, whom he credited with significantly influencing his development as an artist.

Throughout his career, De Alvis was deeply inspired by the works of artists such as William Turner, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Jules Pascin, Claude Venard, and Nicolas de Staël. His oeuvre encompasses a wide range of subjects, including still lifes featuring bouquets, musical instruments, and everyday objects, as well as landscapes from his travels across Italy, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, and later, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

A significant portion of his work is dedicated to capturing the essence of Paris, his beloved city. He expressed his affection for Paris, stating:

"Paris, my city, my beautiful city, eternal and yet so changing and disturbing but never disappointing, to which I always return despite the beauties discovered elsewhere."

De Alvis's artistic process involved creating sketches during his explorations, which he later developed into detailed works in his studio. He employed various mediums, including oil, gouache, and ink, on surfaces such as paper, canvas, wood, and silk.

Michel de Alvis passed away in October 2019 in Paris's 12th arrondissement, leaving behind a rich legacy of artworks that continue to celebrate the beauty of Paris and the diverse landscapes he encountered throughout his life.
