Museum Quality WWII Naval Battle Painting – Sinking of Battleship Yamato, April 1945 | Eric Tufnell 1963 Watercolour with Provenance
Subject & Medium
Watercolour on paper depicting the dramatic destruction of the Imperial Japanese battleship Yamato during Operation Ten-Go on April 7th, 1945. Presented under glass in its original period frame.
Composition & Technique
This striking marine work is executed in Eric Tufnell’s recognised documentary style, combining precise naval draughtsmanship with expressive painterly handling. The Yamato is portrayed in a commanding three-quarter bow view, advancing through a churning sea under sustained aerial attack.
Layered washes of deep blues and greys create a strong sense of movement and depth within the water, while carefully placed highlights convey the explosive force of near-miss bomb strikes. Dense plumes of smoke rise from the superstructure, punctuated by flashes of fire and anti-aircraft bursts.
Above, formations of attacking aircraft are rendered with confident economy, suggesting both scale and overwhelming force. The composition achieves a refined balance between technical accuracy and atmospheric drama, drawing the viewer directly into the intensity of the scene.
Historical Context
Battle of the East China Seas – Sinking of the Japanese Battleship Yamato, April 7th 1945
The Yamato was the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever constructed, displacing approximately 72,000 tons and equipped with the largest naval guns ever mounted. She represented the culmination—and ultimate obsolescence—of battleship warfare.
In April 1945, during the closing stages of the Second World War, Japan launched Operation Ten-Go, a final and desperate naval sortie. The Yamato, accompanied by the light cruiser Yahagi and a small destroyer escort, was dispatched on a one-way mission toward Okinawa with insufficient fuel for return.
The intention was to beach the vessel and employ her as a fixed coastal battery. Before reaching her destination, however, the force was intercepted by overwhelming United States carrier-based aircraft. Successive waves of fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo aircraft attacked with devastating effect.
Torpedoes were deliberately concentrated along one side to induce catastrophic listing, while bomb strikes disabled command and defensive systems. Within approximately two hours, the Yamato was rendered inoperable. She capsized at around 14:20 and was subsequently destroyed by a massive internal explosion.
The loss of the Yamato, with the vast majority of her crew, is widely regarded as marking the definitive end of the battleship era and the unquestioned dominance of naval air power.
About the Artist
Commander Eric Erskine Campbell Tufnell (1888–1978) was a British Royal Navy officer and accomplished marine painter, noted for his historically accurate depictions of naval vessels and maritime engagements.
Born in Bangalore during the British Empire, he was educated in England and entered the Royal Navy as a cadet at HMS Britannia. His early naval service provided a depth of first-hand maritime experience that is clearly reflected in the technical precision of his work.
Following his naval career, Tufnell established himself as a specialist marine artist, producing works frequently commissioned by naval officers and private collectors. His paintings are valued for their combination of documentary accuracy and atmospheric quality.
He exhibited through respected London dealers, most notably The Parker Gallery, Albemarle Street, a well-regarded mid-20th century gallery known for handling quality British paintings and commissioned works.
His works have appeared at major auction houses including Christie’s and Bonhams, with consistent collector interest, particularly in WWII-era naval subjects and named vessels.
