Description

JOSEPH TRÉVOUX (Lyon, 1831-1909)
Landscape with a lake (probably near Vignieu)
1892
Oil on panel
30 x 40 cm
Signature lower left: Js. Trévoux
Countersigned and dated in red on the back: Trévoux / 12 juin 1892
Hairline crack, 5 cm, at the upper right corner of the panel

Jospeh Trévoux, born in Lyon in 1831, was the pupil, alongside Paul Borel, of Louis Janmot. Janmot was himself a great landscapist, although not a specialist (I reviewed an exhibition on Janmot held the Musée d’Orsay in 2023 for the Burlington Magazine), and the three artists Janmot-Borel-Trévoux, remained close friends throughout their lives, painting outdoors together, and playing music together, often in the company of the industrialist and photographer Félix Thiollier. Trévoux came from a well-off family which made certain things easy for him: he travelled extensively to Italy, Germany, the Low Countries and all-around France, but there is no doubting his sincerity as an artist and his devotion to painting. While he lived mostly in Lyon, the main Trévoux family home was in Vignieu sixty-five kilometres east of Lyon, where the countryside starts to turn into the pre-Alps. The family had forestry interests, and it is noteworthy that Trévoux established a logging company in Rome based on the construction of a new railway line, at the same time as he was studying painting there!

In my opinion Trévoux is the best Lyon landscape painter of the second half of the nineteenth century. A bigger name today is that of his compatriot François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895), but Ravier, by no means a bad painter, churned out endless watercolours and oils in a flashy impressionist style with quasi-Turneresque effects, and he exhibits no-where near the same deep understanding of the geometry of nature found in Trévoux’s works. Trévoux’s landscapes are always real compositions, never affected daubs, created out of his intellectual and emotional response the natural landscape in front of him. I am not alone in my opinion, if we can judge a someone by the company they keep, his two best friends, Janmot and Borel, were the best painters in Lyon.

Although Trévoux travelled extensively in search of landscapes, the core, the heart, of his oeuvre is the countryside in proximity to Lyon: around Vignieu in the Dauphiné (where he was from), the Loire to the north of Saint-Étienne and west of Lyon, and to some extent the Bugey to the northeast of Lyon. The present painting is centred on a small lake, or large pond, probably in the vicinity of Vignieu. Trévoux was obviously fascinated with this spot, because another painting of exactly the same location, from a slightly different angle, is currently with a gallery in Atlanta (Georgia). The painting in Georgia, which has the same dimensions, is more than four times the price, and while I’m not sure why this is, my aim is always to provide museum quality works at affordable prices, and this wonderful landscape by Trévoux falls squarely into this category.

A note on the wood support and the hairline crack. Trévoux liked to work on very thin panels of cheap wood rather than high quality ready prepared panels from an artist supply shop. This is characteristic of many of the most creative landscape painters, not least Rubens who preferred cast-off bits of wood rather than professionally made panels. Closer to Trévoux’s time I have also found this to be the case with other artist including Jean-Baptiste Arnaud-Durbec, and Jean Chorel and Mathilde Hautrive who liked to use the long thin tops of cigar boxes for their landscapes. Because these panels are so thin and cheap there is a tendency for them to split. The hairline crack in the upper right corner of the panel could be repaired either with a slip of glue or even a butterfly hinge, but actually I would just leave it. It would not have bothered Trévoux, all that mattered to him was transmitting the soul of the landscape in front of him into the paint on his panel.
