Vibrant Mediterranean market scene painted in 1989 depicting the lively atmosphere of Torroella de Montgrí, a historic town in the Costa Brava region of Catalonia.
The composition captures the bustle of an open-air village market beneath luminous white awnings that stretch across the scene, creating a striking interplay of light and shadow. Figures lean over stalls filled with goods while vendors and shoppers interact in a dynamic choreography of movement and color.
Executed with energetic brushwork and generous impasto, the painting reflects the expressive late style of Catalan painter Josep Sarquella. Rather than focusing on precise detail, the artist uses sweeping gestures and bold color contrasts to evoke the rhythm and vitality of Mediterranean daily life.
The architecture of the village buildings rises behind the market stalls, framing the scene with warm terracotta tones and soft pastel facades typical of Catalan coastal towns. The bright market canopies act as a central compositional element, guiding the viewer’s eye across the bustling activity below.
Market scenes such as this are particularly sought after for their decorative presence and narrative charm. The combination of lively figures, Mediterranean architecture and expressive impressionist brushwork makes the painting an engaging focal point in both contemporary and classic interiors.
Works depicting Mediterranean village markets are highly appreciated by collectors and interior designers alike, as they evoke the atmosphere of southern Europe and the timeless character of traditional street life along the Costa Brava.
Josep Sarquella i Escobet (1928–2000) was a Catalan painter known for his landscapes and scenes of everyday life along the Costa Brava. Born in Llagostera and later active in Palamós, he devoted much of his work to capturing the atmosphere of Mediterranean towns and coastal landscapes.
His painting evolved toward a more expressive post-impressionist language characterized by vigorous brushwork, textured surfaces and vibrant color contrasts. Sarquella exhibited widely in Catalonia and built a loyal following among collectors drawn to his energetic interpretations of Mediterranean light and daily life.
Today his works remain appreciated for their decorative strength and their vivid portrayal of Catalan coastal culture.
