Description
This beautiful exhibited British Impressionist coastal landscape oil painting is by noted artist John Alfred Arnesby Brown. Painted in 1931 it was exhibited at the Royal Academy London the same year and titled The Channel, the location is Wells Next the Sea in Norfolk. (The name is to distinguish it from other places of the same name). The artist lived and worked in Norfolk as well as spending much time in St Ives, Cornwall. The painting was formerly in the collection of Gloucestershire art collector Maurice Costley. The view is looking across the water towards Wells and the long stretch of the harbour front with a promenade. The distinctive landmark of the seafront, to the left in the painting, is the granary with its overhanging gantry on the quay, started in 1904 and finished in 1905. This has now been converted into flats, having ceased operating as a granary in 1990 but still has the overhanging gantry. Other landmarks to the right can be seen. Boats are dotted about the harbour and a blustery sky is over head. The beauty of this painting lies in the fantastic characteristic brushwork that makes Arnesby Brown's work so readily identifiable. They brushwork in the sky is just superb, with its bold strokes and impasto. The deceptively muted palette contains a vast range of subtle colours - in the water in the foreground and the seafront buildings. This is a beautiful British thirties exhibited oil painting of Wells next the Sea and an excellent example of Arnesby Brown's work.

Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown RA (1866-1955) was an English landscape artist and one of the leading British landscape artists of the 20th century and best known for his impressionistic depictions of pastoral landscapes, often featuring cattle. Arnesby Brown first studied at the Nottingham School of Art in the late 1880s, before entering the studio of Andrew McCallum where he first started to paint outdoors. This was followed by a move to London where he became a pupil of Hubert von Herkomer, and was influenced by Barbizon and Impressionist landscape painters. He later studied at the Bushey School of Art in Hertfordshire for four years from 1889. Brown spent much of his life at St Ives, Cornwall, between 1890 and 1910, where he came to paint 'en plein air' with artists such as Stanhope Forbes and Adrian Stokes. He was highly respected in Cornwall and was elected President of St Ives Society of Artists. Sir John Arnesby Brown ranks alongside the top British Impressionists. Three of his paintings were purchased for the nation by the Chantrey Bequest, at a time when it was considered as an 'unprecedented compliment' for an artist to have two works thus selected. After exhibiting at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1890, he became an elected Associate there in 1903. In 1896 he married Mia Edwards (1870–1931), a painter who studied at Bushey under Sir Hubert von Herkomer. They lived in Norfolk and St Ives, Cornwall. Arnesby Brown was knighted in 1938. He died in 1955, having not painted since 1942 due to blindness. He is buried in the cemetery of the Parish Church of St Mary in his hometown of Haddiscoe, Norfolk. His brother Eric Brown (1877–1939) was the first director of the National Gallery of Canada, from 1912 till 1939.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.

Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.

A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.

We coordinate the return with either the seller's chosen courier or our trusted delivery partner.
All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.
- For smaller or parcel-sized items, you can choose to post the item back yourself using a tracked service, or the seller can suggest a preferred courier.
- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.
- Return delivery costs vary depending on size and courier.

3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.

7. Refunds
Once the seller receives the piece back in the same condition it was sent, we'll issue your refund to your original payment method.
Once a refund is issued, it may take up to 5–10 working days for the funds to appear back on your original payment method, depending on your bank or card provider.
If the item is returned with new damage that wasn't present at delivery, the refund may be adjusted following review.
