Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art in the English county of Dorset, this original oil painting is by the French post-impressionist artist Jean Chaleye.
The painting is presented and supplied in a later 20th century elaborate frame (which is shown in these photographs).
This antique painting is in very good condition, defying its age and is supplied ready to hang and display.
The painting is signed lower right.
Jean Chaleye was considered one of the most important French post impressionist artists. He was born to working class parents on 22.4.1878 at St. Etienne and died at Le Puy in 1960. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon, then at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He began his career as a commercial engraver then worked for a while in the textile industry where flower painting had developed as an important discipline and was used decoratively in the manufacture of silk. Along with a group of other artists he began to paint flowers in a new fashion, rendering them light and transparent and full of grace. His still life paintings of flowers, which he continued to paint throughout his life, are among his very best works.
In 1902 Jean Chaleye took part in the prestigious Fair of French Artists and subsequently exhibited widely, including a retrospective at the Organerie Du Luxemburg, Paris and the Wally Findlay Gallery in New York. In 1953 the city of Marseille held a jubilee exhibition to celebrate his then fifty year career.

This stunning original oil on board depicts a vase of flowers on a tablecloth, on a small round table. There are yellow marigolds, and carnations in both pale pink and dark pink, with a little green foliage behind. The cloth and background are examples of a technique similar to the classic impressionistic pointillism, with small dots or dabs of paint being applied to create a larger whole, a shimmering effect of rainbow colours. This painting highlights Chaleye’s skills as a master colourist.

This antique painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age.
The frame has some very minor nicks and dents to its rear edges but nothing to really detract.
Its overall appearance is very good and it is supplied ready to hang and display.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.

Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.

2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.

A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item

B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.

We coordinate the return with either the seller's chosen courier or our trusted delivery partner.
All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.
- For smaller or parcel-sized items, you can choose to post the item back yourself using a tracked service, or the seller can suggest a preferred courier.
- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.
- Return delivery costs vary depending on size and courier.

3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.
