Formatosi, dopo gli studi tradizionali, a Pasmurovo, una località della regione di Orenburg in cui s’incontravano gruppi di artisti per lavorare dal vero e confrontarsi, Smekalov ha successivamente aderito all’Unione degli Artisti Russi ed è entrato a far parte dell’Accademia Sadki, dove ha proseguito nella ricerca di un’arte purissima, scevra da ogni coinvolgimento sociale. In quest’ottica si delinea un discorso scandito da opere che trasmettono il senso del suo mondo interiore e che mettono in evidenza la lirica resa del soggetto. La formazione artistica di Smekalov è ricca anche di riferimenti alla pittura italiana, come rivelano i delicati accordi cromatici, gli interni metafisici, le nature morte con scodelle e bottiglie, che si riallacciano alla splendida lezione di Giorgio Morandi. Così come, osservando le tele che raccontano di bambine e fanciulle assorte, di volti permeati da una sottile malinconia, di stanze con figure raccolte si avverte una lezione che, a tratti, sembra ricondurci a Casorati. Il suo cammino è frutto, quindi, di un temperamento complesso, di una seria, impegnativa e coraggiosa scelta del linguaggio, di una linea espressiva che è contraddistinta dalla qualità del disegno, dallo studio del nudo dal vero, dalla trascrizione sulla tela di suggestive nature morte.
1965 Nasce a Orenburg, città sul fiume Ural situata al limite orientale della Russia, dove vive e lavora.
1984 Si diploma presso il Liceo artistico di Orenburg.
1990-1995 Sono anni di formazione, segnati in particolare da quella che Smekalov stesso definisce “l’avventura” di Pasmurovo, una località nella regione di Orenburg in cui s’incontravano gruppi di artisti per studiare, lavorare dal vero e confrontarsi. Queste esperienze sfociano in mostre collettive intitolate Pasmurovo e allestite a Orenburg dal 1991 a 1995.
1993 Aderisce all’Unione degli Artisti Russi.
1994 Diviene membro del gruppo artistico Accademia Sadki, sulla cui storia nel 2008 pubblicherà un volume. Si tratta di un gruppo di artisti contestatori, refrattari all’arte ufficiale, che alla metà degli anni Settanta si ritrovavano clandestinamente nelle cantine di Orenburg. Per sfuggire al clima oppressivo della città si rifugiarono nel villaggio di Sadki, sulle rive del Mar d’Azov, condividendo questa esperienza di libertà umana e artistica, e in seguito nel villaggio di Arkhiz, a 2.800 metri d’altitudine. È in questo ritorno all’essenziale, immersi nella natura, nei suoi colori, nella sua luce che vengono definiti i principi fondamentali delle loro ricerche artistiche. Negli anni successivi, mutata anche la situazione politica, nuovi artisti vengono ammessi nel gruppo, animati dallo stesso spirito dei loro predecessori.
2002 È tra gli artisti inseriti nel volume Galassia, dedicato a 7 pittori di Orenburg.
2004 Si laurea presso l’Università di Magnitogorsk.
2009 Consegue il dottorato in Arte. Insegna Disegno e Pittura presso l’Università di Orenburg.
Attualmente è curatore presso il dipartimento di Arti Grafiche della Galleria Tretyakov di Mosca.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.
To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.
- Pickup arranged for you
- One clear fee, no surprises
We coordinate the return with either the seller's chosen courier or our trusted delivery partner.
All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.
- For smaller or parcel-sized items, you can choose to post the item back yourself using a tracked service, or the seller can suggest a preferred courier.
- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.
- Return delivery costs vary depending on size and courier.
The seller will confirm the best option based on the item.
3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.
- Let us know as soon as possible (ideally within 72 hours of delivery) so we can resolve things quickly
- Share photos so we understand what happened
- We’ll help arrange a return and refund if needed

4. What can't be returned

Returns are completed smoothly once the pickup is arranged.
7. Refunds
Once the seller receives the piece back in the same condition it was sent, we'll issue your refund to your original payment method.
Once a refund is issued, it may take up to 5–10 working days for the funds to appear back on your original payment method, depending on your bank or card provider.
If the item is returned with new damage that wasn't present at delivery, the refund may be adjusted following review.
