Description

Miniature portrait, gouache and watercolour, from the Belle Epoque period of a fine 18th century lady, probably Madame Sophie Fille de Louis XV after Jean Marc Nattier, by noted portraitist and historical painter Friedrich August Von Kaulbach. The painting is monogram signed right centre and is presented in a fine period frame with gilt metal insert. The back of the miniature opens and there is a hand written inscription and attribution (see photo).

This exquisite oval miniature captures a refined figure of a woman from the Rococo era, expertly painted with intricate detail. Her elegantly coiffed hair is adorned with delicate blooms, harmonizing with the floral abundance she cradles. The luminous lace of her gown cascades with meticulous precision, reflecting the opulence of her attire. A serene expression graces her face, exuding grace and poise, while her hands gently grasp a single flower and a basket of other blooms, symbols of refinement and subtle elegance. The background reveals a verdant landscape with a robust tree, adding depth and natural beauty to the composition. Encased in a lovely period frame, this miniature stands as a testament to the intricate craftsmanship and rich artistic tradition of its time, drawing the viewer into its serene and sophisticated world.

Friedrich August von Kaulbach
1850 Munich - 1920 Ohlstadt, Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Born on 2 June 1850 in Munich as the son of the history and portrait painter Friedrich Kaulbach. Friedrich August received his first artistic training from his father in Hanover, where his parents had moved with the four-year-old boy. The eighteen-year-old art student, who was particularly attracted by the medieval world of forms, then went to Nuremberg and studied at art school with August Kreling and Karl Raupp and then again with his father. In 1871 Kaulbach went to Munich and painted in the circle of Wilhelm Diez, Franz Lenbach, Hans Makart and others. In 1873 and 1874 he travelled to Italy to study the Venetians. From 1883 to 1885 he stayed in Italy every year. In 1886 he took up permanent residence in Munich, where he succeeded the deceased academy director Karl von Piloty in the same year.

Old German Nuremberg and the general enthusiasm for the old German Renaissance determined Kaulbach's artistic beginnings. Later, Flemish and Venetian impulses were added, as well as impressions from Paris. He gained fame for his portraits of elegant ladies of the upper class, which he staged in a fashionable attitude with pleasing brushstrokes. His numerous portraits of children, on the other hand, are less elaborate and more characteristic.

Madame Sophie, Sophie-Philippe-Élisabeth-Justine de France, known as Madame Sixième and later Madame Sophie, was born at the Palace of Versailles on 21 July 1734 and died in the same place on 3 March 1782. She was one of eight daughters by the king and Maria Leszczynska, and one of four children to survive them out of the ten they had. She embodied, with her two sisters Adelaide of France and Victoire of France, the main opposition to Queen Marie-Antoinette of Austria.
