Description

Collector-Grade Masterpiece Signed British Marine Oil Painting “Kathleen & May” Schooner Ship By John Lewis Chapman — Framed
Subject & Medium:
A traditional British maritime ship portrait depicting the celebrated schooner Kathleen & May at sea, painted in oil on canvas and presented in a decorative gilt frame. This is a statement-scale marine work intended for refined interiors—ideal for an executive office, library, coastal home, yacht-club setting, or curated corporate space.
Composition & Technique:
The schooner is shown in confident side profile, sailing left across energetic, choppy water, with a convincing bow wave and layered sea tones that create depth and motion. The sky is dramatic and storm-weighted, yet relieved by clearer blue breaks that brighten the scene and add a strong sense of atmosphere. Chapman’s approach is classic ship-portrait in spirit—disciplined structure, careful sail geometry and rigging—while still keeping painterly life in the sea and cloud forms. Deck details, including working figures and fittings, are crisply described, and the Red Ensign flying aloft reinforces the British maritime identity of the subject. The ship’s name “KATHLEEN & MAY” is painted on the bow, strengthening both authenticity and collector appeal.
About The Ship:
The Kathleen & May is celebrated as the last surviving British-built wooden-hulled, three-masted topsail schooner, a genuine icon of working sail and a rare survivor of the coastal trading era. Built in 1900, she was constructed in North Wales at Connah’s Quay, Flintshire, with the robust practical engineering that working merchants demanded—heavy timbers, strong planking, and a hull designed to take hard service rather than merely look handsome. Launched originally under the name “Lizzie May,” she later took the name Kathleen & May, and her career reads like a living summary of maritime transition: from the final flourishing of sail-driven coastal commerce through the gradual introduction of engines and altered rig, and then into preservation consciousness as the modern world recognised how few authentic working schooners remained. Her operational story is rooted in the Irish Sea and Bristol Channel trading routes—coal and coastal cargo work that depended on seaworthiness, efficient handling, and crews who knew these waters intimately. Over time she was modified in ways typical of hard-working vessels: rig changes for practicality, and later the addition/upgrade of mechanical power to keep her commercially viable as pure sail trade declined. For collectors, what matters is that Kathleen & May is not a generic “tall ship” name—she is a documented, historically meaningful vessel, frequently referenced by maritime enthusiasts and historic ship registries, which gives this painting a subject with genuine recognition and a strong narrative anchor.
About The Artist:
John L. Chapman (British, b.1946) is known for transport, townscape, rural and maritime subjects, with a strong following for traditional British scene painting. His career and market presence are documented in established art references and auction records.
Signed:
Signed lower corner J. L. Chapman. Titled verso: “Kathleen & May Schooner — J. L. Chapman.”
Historical Significance:
This offering stands out as a curated “pairing” because it is accompanied by a ready-made reference archive connected to the ship and subject matter, enhancing both display and provenance continuity. Along with the painting, the buyer receives related books/magazines and printed reference material about the Kathleen & May (as photographed), including Ships Monthly material (with an October 1967 issue present in the accompanying group) and additional ship-related ephemera that supports the narrative and context of the artwork. In practical terms, you are not simply acquiring a decorative painting—you are acquiring a conversation piece with supporting documentation that collectors and designers value because it strengthens the story on the wall.
Dimensions Framed: 63.5 cm x 89 cm x 4 cm
Framed:
Presented in a decorative gilt frame that gives the work a higher-end finish and substantial wall presence. The warm gilding complements the sail and sea palette and helps the painting read as a premium interior statement rather than a casual nautical print.
Provenance:
From a private Lake District–based collector, acquired through a notable Northern auction house in Cumbria & Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD and offered from our collection with the associated supporting material.
Condition Report:
Offered in fine used condition. The paint surface presents well overall, with areas of craquelure and some foxing/staining visible in places consistent with age and handling. The frame shows general wear, including scuffs, chips, small losses and some cracking in areas, commensurate with age and use. Hanging thread fitted—ready to display.
Worldwide Shipping:
The painting will be professionally packaged and fully insured for safe global delivery.
