Crafted in the celebrated black basalt stoneware, this medallion showcases the luxurious, satin-matte finish and crisp modelling that made Wedgwood’s basalt wares so sought-after among Georgian connoisseurs. Measuring approximately 7cm in height, it is an ideal size for cabinet display, framing, or incorporation into a curated collection of fine ceramics and portrait medallions.

Wedgwood & Bentley portrait medallions are highly prized for their historical significance and refined neoclassical style. This 18th century basalt medallion of Sully is not only a beautiful decorative object, but also a piece of cultural and artistic history. The sharply defined profile, elegant modelling, and deep black body exemplify the technical innovation that helped establish Wedgwood as one of the most important names in European ceramics.
Black basalt was one of Josiah Wedgwood’s most celebrated innovations, prized for its dense, fine-grained body and sophisticated appearance. This medallion demonstrates:
- Crisp relief portrait with finely rendered facial features and hair
- Elegant neoclassical profile, typical of 18th century portraiture
- Rich black body with a smooth, refined surface
- A timeless aesthetic that sits comfortably alongside both Georgian and modern interiors
Display & Interior Use:
This Wedgwood basalt medallion is perfect for:
- Display in a cabinet of fine porcelain and pottery
- Framing as wall art for a study, library, or drawing room
- Pairing with other neoclassical portrait plaques for a curated, museum-quality arrangement
- Adding a refined historical accent to traditional or contemporary interiors
Its compact 7cm height makes it versatile and easy to place, while the depth of colour and subtle detailing draw the eye even in a small space.
