Description
This collection of three framed prints celebrates the iconic Battle Abbey, located in East Sussex, on the site of the historic 1066 Battle of Hastings. Each piece captures a different aspect of the abbey’s rich architectural and cultural heritage—from sweeping estate views to the imposing gateway façade.
These prints span the late 18th to early 20th century, and together offer a visual timeline of how Battle Abbey has been viewed and admired over the centuries. They would be a perfect addition to any collection of historic English prints, Sussex heritage, or monastic and ecclesiastical architecture.
11A fine early engraving titled “Battle Abbey in Sussex”, etched in high detail with sweeping horizontal lines and classic Georgian composition. This plate was published by Alexander Hogg, known for his work on historical and topographical publications. The finely rendered sky and architecture suggest the influence of early antiquarian engravers.
Framed in black and gilt wood, the piece shows age-related wear, giving it a charming sense of historical authenticity. An excellent example of Georgian-era topographical engraving. This frame and print are a little loose. The frame actually isn't in too bad a condition - scratched and loose yes, but with a bit of tlc will clean up well. The print is on very rough old looking paper and is in good condition.
Middle Print – Early 19th Century Copperplate Engraving (c.1800s–1820s)
This more minimalist print offers a clean and spacious elevation of Battle Abbey, likely derived from a copperplate engraving sourced from a travel or architecture folio. Labeled simply as “Battle Abbey, Sussex. Pl. 2”, the engraving includes subtle human figures to indicate scale. Framed in a mid-century gold and wood frame with original cream mount. Published by Hooper and possibly engraved by Godfrey. It provides a refined, architectural perspective and serves as a lovely visual counterpoint to the more decorative pieces in the set.
Hand-Coloured Lithograph or Early Print (c.1880s–1910), Titled “Gateway, Battle Abbey”, this image shows the majestic arched entrance with its fortified towers and crenellated battlements, likely derived from a 19th-century travel guide or pictorial souvenir. This version features light watercolour-style hand tinting, especially in the foliage and architectural shadows. It is the most decorative of the three and would look stunning in a hallway or study.
Framed in gilt wood with visible surface wear to the frame and light foxing on the mount and print —entirely consistent with age. Whilst a little loose in its gilt frame, this print has string for hanging.
Each work individually reflects the enduring fascination with Battle Abbey’s ruins and architecture across centuries. As a triptych, they are ideal for a feature wall or historical display, whether in a home, office, or heritage guesthouse.
