Description

Designed by Hans Due and introduced by Fog & Mørup in 1977, the Phister wall lamp is an outstanding example of late Scandinavian Modern lighting, combining sculptural simplicity with ingenious functionality.

Characterised by its bold geometric form, each lamp is composed of two intersecting cylinders, both cut at opposing 45-degree angles to create a distinctive architectural silhouette. The clean lines and carefully balanced proportions reflect Hans Due's approach to industrial design, where every detail serves both a practical and aesthetic purpose.

The fixed upper cylinder houses the electrical components and incorporates the original cylindrical push switch positioned on the top of the lamp, allowing effortless operation—particularly useful when installed as a bedside reading light. The lower cylinder forms the adjustable shade and rotates through 360 degrees, enabling the light to be directed exactly where required. When illuminated, the narrow gap between the two sections produces a subtle halo of light, emphasising the lamp's sculptural construction.

Originally conceived by Hans Due in metal, the design was reinterpreted by Fog & Mørup in injection-moulded ABS plastic, creating a lighter and more contemporary expression that appealed to the emerging design-conscious market of the late 1970s. Produced in a limited range of colours—including yellow ochre, light grey, red, dark green and chocolate brown—original coloured examples have become increasingly sought after by collectors.

An additional feature of the Phister is its versatility. Designed with integrated mounting slots, each lamp can be used either as a wall light or as a freestanding table or bedside lamp.

About Hans Due
Hans Due (1935–2021) was one of Denmark's foremost industrial designers, celebrated for his ability to combine technical innovation with elegant simplicity. During his long collaboration with Fog & Mørup, he created several acclaimed lighting collections, including the award-winning Formel series and the highly regarded Optima range. His work remains admired for its functional intelligence, geometric clarity, and enduring modern aesthetic.

About Fog & Mørup
Founded in Copenhagen in 1904, Fog & Mørup became one of Denmark's leading lighting manufacturers, collaborating with many of the country's most influential designers, including Jo Hammerborg, Hans Due, Claus Bonderup, Torsten Thorup, and Jørgen Bo. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the company gained international recognition for producing lighting that combined innovative engineering with timeless Scandinavian design.

With its ingenious construction, sculptural form, and versatile functionality, the Phister remains one of Hans Due's most distinctive lighting designs. This original matching pair in the less commonly seen brown finish is an increasingly collectible example of late twentieth-century Danish design.
