Description
An extraordinary piece of British aristocratic history, this exquisite three-volume pocket devotional set comprises a London-printed Stereotype Edition Bible, George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1824, accompanied by companion books of common prayer and altitudinal devotions. Designed for portable piety, the volumes are bound in dark structured leather with gilt monogram stamping "A. E. W." to the front boards, and are preserved together in their original custom-fitted leather travel case.
The true marvel of this offering lies in its deeply personal, meticulously recorded multi-generational family provenance. The custom storage case retains an emotive, handwritten contemporary note dated 1879, revealing that the set was originally "given to my darling mother on her wedding day, by her father Lord Ravensworth, & was most constantly used by her throughout her life". The flyleaves and endpapers of the Holy Bible contain handwritten family genealogical chronicles spanning decades, detailing the births and Godparentages of the Williamson children born at Florence and Whitburn Hall. Godparents listed read like a who's who of 19th-century British nobility, including prominent figures from the houses of Normanby, Northumberland, and Dundas.
This union connects Anne Elizabeth Williamson (née Liddell), daughter of Thomas Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth, to the historic Williamson family seat of Whitburn Hall in County Durham. A rare survival of intimate Victorian aristocracy, offering tangible links to high-society genealogy, exceptional custom packaging, and centuries of devotional heritage.
The physical evidence inscribed across the books and the custom box tells a tightly interwoven story of 19th-century British peerage:
The Primary Owner & Monogram "A. E. W.": The initials stamped on the covers and the opening inscription "Anne Elizabeth Williamson, April 18–1826", identify the original owner as Hon. Anne Elizabeth Liddell, who married Hedworth Williamson. The handwritten note inside the custom case, signed “J. A. W., 1879”, confirms the case and books were a wedding gift from her father, Thomas Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth (a prominent northern English peer), which she used constantly throughout her life. The flyleaves of the Holy Bible act as a private family registry. They document the births of the Williamson children at locations ranging from Florence to Whitburn Hall, the family's ancestral seat in County Durham.
The historical weight of the set is amplified by the recorded Godparents for the children in the 1820s and 1830s, which include high-ranking nobility such as the Marquis of Normanby, the Duke of Northumberland, Lord Barrington, and members of the Dundas family.
Each volume measures: 14 x 8.5cm (5.5" x 3,35") .
All three volumes bear the gilt cover initials "A. E. W.", the three spine titles are 'HOLY BIBLE", "COMMON PRAYER" and "COMPAN", the box has been designed as a book and the spine title reads "BIBLE, PRAYER & COMPAN.". The wooden box is leather wrapped with gilt embossed leather, the leather cover would have originally acted as a hinge for the lid but is now detached. The titles are complete with clean text and wear to the leather covers commensurate with two centuries of use, the bindings are tight with the exception of the three blank flyleaves in the book of Common Prayer which are attached but loose.
