Description:
A fine quality antique English pair of oak joint stools, constructed from 17th century oak timbers, during the late 19th Century, circa 1880, displaying a stunning colour and patination, in excellent condition. This is antique pair of oak stools which have been constructed in the traditional manner, during the early part of the 20th century from 17th century timbers. The pair of pair of stools incorporate single-plank overhanging moulded tops, with a decorative moulded and shaped reeded friezes below. The pair of oak joint stools are raised on four elegant protruding baluster ring-turned legs, which are united by bar stretchers (for additional strength), terminating terminate on block feet. The pair of stools have been made with traditional method, incorporating mortise and tenon joints, secured by oak pegs.
As this pair of oak stools boast the original patination, they have a fantastic colour - this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received. The pair of oak stools have been cleaned and waxed-polished by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop.
This pair of oak joint stools would look superb in a variety of rooms from the living room, as small side or lamp tables or in the bedroom, as bedside tables. History of Joint Stools
Joint stools, a basic form of seating in 17th and early 18th century households, were characteri ed by their simple design of four turned legs joined by stretchers, often made using mortise-and-tenon joinery. They were versatile and widely used for everyday seating, dining, and even as footstools. During the 1500’s, the joint, or "joyned", stool remained the primary form, made by joiners of mortise and tenon construction, with sturdy splayed and sometimes carved legs. During the 1600’s, leg enhancement by 'turning' - i.e. wood being worked and chiselled into balusters, balls, bobbins, etc., whilst turning on a lathe by a 'turner' - was introduced for the joint stool. They were the pre-cursor to chairs in England. While common in their time, surviving examples are relatively rare due to their hard use and the passage of time.

Free UK Delivery*:
We offer free delivery to mainland England, Wales, and Southern Scotland (anywhere south of Stirling). *We do not offer free delivery to locations north of Stirling in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or any British Islands off the mainland; for example, the Isle of Man, Isle of White and Channel Islands. If you live in one of the areas where we do not offer free delivery, please contact us for a delivery quote before purchasing the item. Delivery will be made by our specialised antique furniture delivery service, or in some cases we will use a courier service for distant deliveries.
Delivery times are usually 1-4 weeks depending on location; we aim to deliver the majority of items within 2 weeks. All items are professionally packaged and fully insured in transit; therefore, we can assure you, your items will be securely protected in transit and arrive safely with you.
Once you have purchased an item, we will contact you by email and/or telephone and provide you with a provisional delivery date, in order for you to confirm if it is suitable for you. Once you have confirmed you can accept delivery on the provisional delivery date, we will book the delivery in with our shippers and it then becomes a confirmed delivery date.
We will also provide you with our shippers' contact details, in case you need to contact the driver on the day of delivery. It's helpful if you can provide us with both the landline and mobile telephone number, in case the driver cannot reach you on one of the numbers on the day of delivery, they can contact you on your alternative number.
In order to be able to offer you free delivery, it is based on a 1-man delivery only. For any large items that require 2 people to lift the item, we ask that you are available at the time of delivery to be able to give our shipper a lift off the van and into your house with the item. If you are not able to lift items yourself, we ask that you have someone on hand at the time of delivery to assist our shipper with lifting the item.
14-Day Free UK Returns & Refunds:
A 14-day free “no quibble” returns policy (from the date you receive the item) is available if you are not happy with this item. We will collect the item free of charge from you (we do not charge a return fee / collection fee). You will be given a full refund as long as the item is returned in the same condition. We will collect returns using our own specialist furniture delivery company. We will not accept returns via a courier service (due to experience of damaged items in transit). This refund policy only applies to deliveries to the UK.
UK Buyer Payment:
For UK buyers, we accept cash on collection or delivery; cheque, credit card, BACS (free bank to bank transfer) or PayPal. Payment is requested within 5 days of the sale. Payment must be cleared before the items are collected or delivered.
International Buyers:

The pair of joints stools have been cleaned and wax-polished by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop; therefore, the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. There are no breaks or damage to the frames or legs. The pair of oak stools have been made with traditional mortice and tenon joints, secured by wooden pegs, from solid oak. Nominal old use marks to the tops and leading edges, but nothing significant considering their age. The oak stools are a true pair, which were constructed at the same time, they have not been matched together. Some undulation to the levels of the tops, owing to the age of the timbers. This pair of oak tables are well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.

1. Free cancellations
Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.
To cancel an order, click Create cancellation on the order page.
Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item
This applies to all purchases.
B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
- Applies to furniture delivered from a UK mainland seller to a mainland UK address. Excludes Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Scottish Highlands & Islands, Isle of Wight and Isles of Scilly.
- Pickup arranged for you

We coordinate the return with either the seller's chosen courier or our trusted delivery partner.
All other items
Most smaller items are straightforward to return.
You can still return your item within 14 days.
- For smaller or parcel-sized items, you can choose to post the item back yourself using a tracked service, or the seller can suggest a preferred courier.
- For larger or more fragile pieces, the seller may recommend the safest return method.
- Return delivery costs vary depending on size and courier.

3. If your item arrives damaged
Damage on arrival is uncommon, especially for UK furniture deliveries.
But if something does go wrong, you're fully protected.

- We’ll help arrange a return and refund if needed

7. Refunds
Once the seller receives the piece back in the same condition it was sent, we'll issue your refund to your original payment method.
Once a refund is issued, it may take up to 5–10 working days for the funds to appear back on your original payment method, depending on your bank or card provider.
If the item is returned with new damage that wasn't present at delivery, the refund may be adjusted following review.
