Finn Juhl Furniture
When a Danish architect, interior, and industrial designer, integrates the mind, body, and studies at the renowned Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, you know those designs will be forever celebrated.
Turning his attention to interior and furniture design, Finn Juhl started from scratch without role models or inherited restrictions.
Juhl embraced the mindset of a sculptor when shaping furniture—fascinated by shapes that defy gravity and visual lightness. Juhl's furniture design inspiration started from his own body.
He would analyse the minute details, the chair components, how it carried the human body, the resistance of the material, and joinery.
He wanted each design element to flow effortlessly together as if the seated person was floating in the air.
Art was his primary source of inspiration when creating his furniture, combining two elements: to carry and be carried; he eventually became known for his exceptional ability to separate the bearing parts from the borne.
Despite his unconventional methods, he soon found popularity in a market hungry for modern designs from the Pelican Chair to the Eye Table and Chieftain Chair; he shaped a piece of furniture like never seen before.
A representative of the best Scandinavian design in America during the postwar period, Juhl's furniture is a Danish Modern legacy, with history inscribed into every surface.
