Inside Carmen Maxfield's Collected, Lived-In Crystal Palace Home
In South London, Carmen Maxfield has created a home that's built around feeling, memory and lived-in beauty, from a well-loved reclaimed table to vintage finds collected over time.
In Crystal Palace, Carmen Maxfield has created a home shaped as much by memory as it is by design. Set in a neighbourhood she’s lived in for seven years, the house reflects that same mix of old and new, where antiques, reclaimed pieces and everyday living sit comfortably side by side. It also doubles as a location house, thoughtfully designed not just for family life, but as a characterful backdrop for shoots and brand projects.
At its heart is the kitchen and dining space, opened up into one large room where everything happens. It’s where family life unfolds, from homework to dinner parties, all centered around a reclaimed table that holds particular meaning. Inspired by her aunt’s well-loved table growing up, it’s a piece designed to be lived with, not looked after too carefully. Marks, scratches and spills are all part of its story, and that relaxed attitude sets the tone for the rest of the home.
That sense of ease carries through in the way the space has been finished. Bare plaster walls, left unpainted, bring texture and depth that shift with the light, while darker elements like the walnut kitchen add contrast without overpowering the room. The palette, influenced by Carmen’s Italian heritage, leans into warm, earthy tones that feel both grounding and familiar, qualities that translate beautifully on camera.
Vintage sits at the core of her approach. Rather than filling the house all at once, pieces have been collected slowly over time from flea markets, travels and local shops, each one adding another layer of personality. Many carry personal significance, while others were chosen instinctively, helping to create a space that feels both curated and completely lived-in.
Throughout, there’s a focus on creating a home that feels evolving rather than finished. A space built around gathering, memory and everyday rituals. It’s this balance of authenticity and atmosphere that makes it feel as natural for living as it does for storytelling.
“It’s about collecting slowly and finding pieces that mean something”
