Introduction
An atmospheric 19th century British landscape by **Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842-1927)** depicting Borrowdale, Cumberland, within the English Lake District.
Dating to circa 1880, the painting captures a peaceful pastoral landscape illuminated by warm afternoon light. A farmer and his cattle follow a winding path through the foreground while areas of pasture, woodland and water lead towards the dramatic Cumberland fells.

The farmer and cattle provide scale and a quiet narrative element within the expansive landscape.
A winding path draws the eye from the foreground through areas of pasture and woodland towards the distant mountains.
Hogley's handling changes noticeably across the composition. Shorter, more descriptive brushstrokes articulate the vegetation, path, cattle and figure in the foreground.
Through the middle distance, the handling becomes broader and freer as areas of green, ochre and brown merge into the wider landscape.
The distant fells are treated more softly, with increasingly blended passages of blue-grey, subdued green and muted violet. Loose, sweeping brushwork within the cloud-streaked sky reinforces the sense of atmosphere.
Warm golden sunlight selectively illuminates areas of the valley, contrasting beautifully with deeper woodland and mountain shadows.

Borrowdale is one of the most celebrated valleys of the English Lake District, extending southwards from Derwentwater towards the mountainous heart of Cumbria.
Its distinctive combination of pasture, woodland, water and imposing fells made the area particularly attractive to nineteenth-century British landscape painters.
Hogley's composition balances the intimate pastoral presence of the farmer and cattle with the greater scale of the surrounding mountains.
The prominent fell may possibly represent Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif, adding an interesting topographical dimension to the painting while remaining a considered rather than definitive identification.
The Artist
Stephen Enoch Hogley (1842-1927) was a British landscape painter closely associated with Yorkshire.
Born at Almondbury near Huddersfield in 1842, Hogley was apprenticed to Peace Sykes and studied drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics' Institution.
He subsequently developed a career principally devoted to landscape painting in oils and watercolours.
His work frequently incorporates hills, lakes, cattle and rural figures, with warm natural light and atmospheric distance forming important characteristics of his landscape painting.
Hogley was associated with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and became a council member in 1895.
G. Rowney & Co., London
The reverse of the canvas bears a **G. Rowney & Co., London** stamp.
G. Rowney & Co. was an established London manufacturer and supplier of artists' materials.
The mark is therefore recorded as an artists' materials supplier or canvas-related manufacturer's mark associated with the support rather than as an ownership or provenance mark.
The surviving stamp forms an interesting part of the physical and material history of the painting.

Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.

Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.
Bespoke, personalised or made-to-order pieces cannot be cancelled.
2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item

B. You changed your mind

To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
