Introduction
A highly distinctive British country portrait by Diana Douglas-Hamilton, bringing together a female sitter, livestock and equestrian subjects within an expansive pastoral setting.
Painted in 2002, the composition places the traditionally identified Camilla Parker Bowles directly behind a large haltered ram.
The sheep, horses, pony and agricultural buildings provide a strong country-house character, while the substantial horizontal format makes the work particularly effective within a traditional interior.

Catalogue Note
The painting is dominated by the large foreground ram.
Its scale and carefully observed features suggest an individual animal portrait, while the sitter's handling of the halter connects the ram directly with the human subject.
Two horses and a pony occupy the right side of the composition, with sheep extending into the surrounding pasture.
Douglas-Hamilton's handling becomes progressively broader towards the distance, producing a strong sense of spatial recession.
Identification of the Sitter
The female sitter is traditionally identified as Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla.
The identification is supported by visual likeness, compatible age and contextual evidence.
Camilla was 54-55 in 2002.
Claydon Auctioneers, however, catalogued the painting merely as a farm scene with a woman, sheep and horses/ponies.
No primary documentation naming Camilla as the sitter has presently been identified. The identification is therefore presented as a researched interpretation rather than documentary proof.
Wiltshire and Ray Mill Context
Ray Mill House near Lacock provides potentially relevant historical context.
There is presently no evidence confirming that the painting depicts the property or was painted there.The Artist
Douglas-Hamilton's training at Edinburgh College of Art and her career in portraiture, animal painting, equestrian art and sculpture are particularly relevant to this composition.
Her experience riding, owning and breeding horses informed a wider body of equestrian work.
