Description

A vibrant Spanish landscape by Rafael Duran Benet depicting the flower-filled countryside of Jaén, Andalusia. Executed in oil on canvas board, the composition transforms the landscape into an exuberant mosaic of emerald greens, turquoise, cobalt blue, violet, white and brilliant accents of red.

Rather than describing the countryside through conventional perspective, Duran Benet constructs the scene through broad, energetic strokes and patches of pure color. Wildflowers dominate the foreground, while trees and open fields emerge progressively toward the upper section of the composition. The result is a highly decorative landscape in which vegetation, light and color almost dissolve into abstraction.

The painting is particularly striking for its chromatic intensity. Cool blues and greens create the principal structure of the landscape, punctuated by vivid red flowers and luminous whites. These concentrated bursts of color give the work a distinctly Fauvist character while maintaining the artist’s strong connection with the Spanish and Mediterranean landscape tradition.

The reverse bears the handwritten title “Campos de Jaén” together with the artist’s name, providing an unusually precise identification of the subject.

Rafael Duran Benet

Rafael Duran Benet was born in Terrassa, Catalonia, in 1931 into a family closely connected with Spanish art. He was the nephew of painter, critic and art historian Rafael Benet i Vancells and the great-nephew of the celebrated Catalan landscape painter Joaquim Vancells.

He began painting during his adolescence and received artistic guidance within the circle surrounding his family, including figures such as sculptor Manolo Hugué and painter Rafael Llimona.

During the 1950s Duran Benet established an important connection with Cadaqués, the Mediterranean village that became one of the great artistic meeting places of postwar Spain. There he encountered figures including Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp, and developed the luminous, color-driven approach to landscape that would become characteristic of his mature work.

His first documented exhibitions date from the 1950s, including Collioure in 1955 and Barcelona’s Sala Vayreda in 1958. From 1960 onward he maintained a long relationship with the prestigious Sala Parés in Barcelona and participated in numerous exhibitions in Spain and abroad.

His work focused primarily on landscapes, Mediterranean scenes and still lifes. In 1980 he received the Henri Forman Prize from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Works by Duran Benet are represented in institutional collections including the Museu d’Art de Girona and the Museu de Terrassa.

Pictorial inspiration

The expressive freedom of Campos de Jaén places Duran Benet within the broader European tradition that transformed landscape painting through color during the 20th century. The intense blues, greens and flashes of vermilion recall the chromatic liberation associated with Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck, while the intimate treatment of nature and vegetation has affinities with Pierre Bonnard.

Within the Catalan tradition, the painting also resonates with the richly colored landscapes of Joaquim Mir, particularly in its tendency to transform natural forms into autonomous areas of pigment and light. The rhythmic simplification of the countryside can additionally evoke the Mediterranean landscapes of Raoul Dufy, while its vigorous handling of paint maintains a connection with the broader Post-Impressionist legacy of Cézanne and Van Gogh.

Duran Benet nevertheless retains a distinctly Spanish identity: the landscape is not treated as an academic view but as an emotional experience of vegetation, heat, light and color.
