DESCRIPTION
Expressive 1979 portrait by Spanish Catalan painter Jordi Curós Ventura, depicting a seated woman resting against the back of a chair beside a vase of flowers.
The composition is particularly characteristic of Curós’s mature figurative period, combining strong drawing, simplified forms and broad areas of warm, contrasting color. The unusual frontal arrangement of the chair creates a powerful geometric structure, while the sitter’s relaxed pose introduces an intimate and contemplative atmosphere.
Curós reduces the figure and surrounding interior to their essential elements. Ochre, red, blue-grey and green tones are organized in flat, clearly defined areas, revealing the continuing influence of Fauvism and European modernism within his highly personal figurative language.
The work is signed and dated “Curós 79” in the upper right corner.
Painted in 1979, this piece belongs to the period in which Curós had fully returned to figurative painting after his earlier experiments with abstraction and Informalism. It is an excellent example of his distinctive combination of expressive color, strong linear construction and everyday human subject matter.
BIOGRAPHY
Jordi Curós Ventura was born in Olot, Catalonia, in 1930 and became an important figure within post-war Catalan painting.
He trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Olot and held his first solo exhibition in Barcelona in 1950. During the following decade he exhibited regularly in Barcelona and Madrid and participated in important Spanish and international exhibitions.
In 1952, Curós was selected by the influential Catalan critic and philosopher Eugeni d’Ors for the X Salón de los Once. In 1953 he participated in the II Hispano-American Biennial in Havana.
His work subsequently appeared in international exhibitions including “Espacio y Color en la Pintura Española Actual” in Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo, exhibitions of contemporary Catalan painting in Lisbon and Porto, and presentations of contemporary Spanish painting in Brussels.
Curós received grants that enabled him to work in Paris, and in 1953 the Barcelona Museum of Modern Art acquired one of his paintings.
After an abstract and Informalist phase during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Curós returned to figurative painting. His mature work is distinguished by expressive drawing, simplified forms, luminous color and an immediate approach to figures, interiors and everyday life.
He exhibited repeatedly at Barcelona’s influential Sala Parés between the 1960s and the late 1980s.
ARTISTIC CONTEXT
Curós’s mature figurative work belongs to the broader tradition of Spanish and Catalan modernism, while displaying affinities with the expressive color and simplified forms associated with Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Kees van Dongen and the Fauvist tradition.
The strong outlines, flattened perspective and deliberately non-naturalistic palette of this 1979 composition make it particularly attractive for collectors of Spanish Modernism, Catalan art, Fauvist painting, post-war European art and 20th-century figurative painting.

You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.

2. Returning an item

B. You changed your mind
