CERTIFICATION
Accompanied by an original period photograph of the painting, bearing on its reverse a handwritten certification signed by Josep Mir Estalella, son of Joaquim Mir, and dated Vilanova, October 1948.
In this document, Josep Mir Estalella identifies the work as painted by his father, Joaquim Mir Trinxet, representing the Masia de Can Roig in Gualba, and states that it was painted in 1939.
The historic photograph and handwritten certification constitute an exceptional early documentary record of the painting, produced only eight years after the artist's death.

DESCRIPTION
Painted in 1939, during the final period of Joaquim Mir's career, this exceptional documented landscape depicts the rural surroundings of Gualba, in Catalonia.
A steep country path rises through the composition between a monumental haystack and the pale façade of a traditional farmhouse. Small human figures and animals animate the scene, while dense vegetation closes the background. Mir constructs the landscape through vigorous, highly expressive brushwork, allowing individual strokes of green, turquoise, ochre, grey and earthy brown to remain visibly active across the surface.
Rather than describing the countryside with academic precision, Mir transforms the humble rural setting through colour, rhythm and movement. The path becomes a succession of broken strokes leading the eye into the composition, while the massive haystack and farmhouse create two powerful opposing volumes.
The restrained palette is characteristic of the artist's late work and contrasts fascinatingly with the chromatic explosions of his celebrated earlier landscapes. Nevertheless, Mir's unmistakable sensitivity to light and colour remains fully present, particularly in the touches of turquoise, emerald green, red and luminous cream scattered throughout the composition.
The painting possesses an unusually rich documentary history.
An original photograph of the work was personally certified in October 1948 by Josep Mir Estalella, the artist's son, who identified the scene as the Masia de Can Roig in Gualba and confirmed that his father painted it in 1939.
The painting subsequently belonged to the important Barcelona collection of Ramón Badrinas.
In 1972 it was selected for the major Joaquim Mir retrospective held at Barcelona's Museo de Arte Moderno, where it appeared as catalogue no. 189.
It was later reproduced in Enric Jardí's monograph on Joaquim Mir as no. 243, again recording its provenance from the Badrinas collection.
The combination of early family certification, historic photographic documentation, distinguished provenance, museum exhibition history and published bibliography gives this painting an exceptional degree of traceability.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joaquim Mir Trinxet (Barcelona, 1873–1940) was one of the most individual and important figures of Catalan painting at the beginning of the 20th century.
Initially associated with the generation of Catalan Modernisme, Mir developed an intensely personal interpretation of landscape in which colour progressively became independent from strict naturalistic representation.
His celebrated landscapes are characterized by energetic brushwork, unconventional compositions and an extraordinary ability to transform vegetation, rocks, architecture and light into almost autonomous fields of colour.
Throughout his career, Mir painted different regions of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, developing a pictorial language that occupies a distinctive position between Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and the emerging chromatic freedom of early 20th-century European painting.
The present work belongs to the final chapter of his career and was painted only one year before his death.
PICTORIAL CONTEXT
Mir's treatment of landscape can be situated within the wider European transformation of painting initiated by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
His free handling of colour recalls the liberation of the palette associated with Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, while his tendency to allow colour and brushwork to dominate naturalistic description anticipates aspects of Fauvism.
Yet Mir remained profoundly connected to the Catalan landscape. His work constitutes a highly personal Mediterranean interpretation of modern European painting, combining direct observation of nature with an increasingly autonomous use of colour.

Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.

2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
