Large Spanish Surrealist oil painting by Catalan artist Francesc Vilaplana, dated 1974. An outstanding example of 1970s Spanish figurative Surrealism, combining mythological symbolism, metaphysical architecture and mysterious faceless figures.
Four figures occupy an imaginary architectural setting dominated by a monumental marble-like table or altar. The two frontal characters wear long draped garments reminiscent of classical or biblical robes, yet their faces are reduced to smooth, enigmatic oval forms.
Above the figures, dramatically isolated on an elevated platform, appears a large egg-like form. This extraordinary element gives the composition its strongest symbolic dimension.
The imagery evokes the ancient concept of the cosmic egg, a primordial symbol of creation, birth and regeneration found in classical and especially Orphic mythology. In the Orphic tradition, the cosmic egg represents the origin from which the first divine being and ultimately the ordered universe emerge.
Vilaplana does not appear to illustrate a specific mythological episode. Instead, he creates an invented ritual in which classical figures, sacred architecture and Surrealist symbolism coexist within an impossible space.
The relationship between the monumental egg and the featureless oval faces is especially compelling. Their repeated shapes suggest ideas of origin, identity, transformation, creation and the emergence of human consciousness.
The composition is constructed through large areas of yellow, green and blue, combining precise figurative painting with an unreal architectural landscape. Monumental forms, strange spatial relationships and the absence of conventional narrative create the psychological stillness associated with European Metaphysical painting and Surrealism.
The result is both highly decorative and intellectually intriguing: a large 1970s Spanish Surrealist painting whose mysterious imagery invites multiple interpretations while retaining a powerful visual presence.
Francesc Vilaplana was born in Barcelona in 1945. He emerged within the renewed figurative and Neo-Surrealist currents that developed in Catalan and Spanish art during the 1970s.
His early artistic activity was closely connected with drawing and graphic work, elements that remained visible in the controlled precision and carefully constructed imagery of his paintings.
Vilaplana became associated with Galeria Adrià in Barcelona, an important exhibition space for a generation of young Catalan artists exploring new forms of figurative painting, Magical Realism and Neo-Surrealism.
In 1975 he presented a solo exhibition at Galeria Adrià comprising more than forty paintings. The accompanying exhibition catalogue included a text by the influential Catalan writer, critic and intellectual Josep Maria Castellet.
Contemporary critical writing situated Vilaplana within Neo-Surrealism and connected his artistic language with Surrealism, Metaphysical painting, Magical Realism and the legacy of Salvador Dalí.
This painting, dated 1974, therefore belongs to a particularly interesting period in Vilaplana's career, immediately preceding his 1975 solo exhibition at Galeria Adrià.
Its combination of classical imagery, faceless figures, symbolic objects and impossible architecture places the work within the wider tradition of Spanish and European Surrealist painting while remaining distinctly connected to the Catalan artistic environment of the 1970s.

Changed your mind before dispatch?
You can cancel any order before it's shipped for a full refund, including delivery.

Once an item has been dispatched, delivery costs are not refundable.

2. Returning an item
You have 14 days from delivery to request a return.
There are two return types:
A. The item isn't as described (free return)
If your piece arrives and it doesn't match the listing in any material way (incorrect description, undisclosed damage, inaccurate measurements, misleading photos), you are fully protected:
- Free return
- The seller or Vinterior arranges pickup
- Full refund, including outbound delivery costs once the seller receives the item

B. You changed your mind
UK-to-UK furniture deliveries:
To make UK furniture returns predictable and stress-free, we offer a simple flat return fee of £75.
