Description

🐎 C1840 Horse Portrait “William The Conqueror” by Samuel Spode – Original Oil, Framed Victorian Equestrian Art
🎯 Subject & Medium
This fine original oil on canvas, dated circa 1840, is the work of renowned British sporting artist Samuel Spode (1798–1872). Titled “William The Conqueror”, it features a powerful and lifelike side-profile portrait of a brown thoroughbred gelding, standing inside his stable. The horse is bridled, facing right, and painted with realistic anatomical detail, his black mane and tail contrasting against the rich sienna hues of his coat. Freckle-like white markings trail along his back, adding nuance and distinction.
Around him, finely observed elements of stable life complete the scene:
- A turquoise tartan blanket marked “WC” draped over a wall rack
- A wooden bucket engraved with the same initials
- A sweeping broom, casually leaned against the stable wall
- A straw-laden cobbled floor, textured and tactile
Together, these elements create a warm, intimate environment that reflects both the horse’s status and the rustic elegance of early Victorian equestrian culture.
🖌️ Composition & Technique
This work exemplifies Spode’s deep understanding of horse anatomy, environment, and character. The gelding is presented in a proud, calm stance, his muscles clearly defined through the use of layered brushstrokes in warm browns, earthy umbers, and subtle highlights.
Spode’s brushwork is measured and expressive:
- Around the horse’s form, the paint is tight and controlled, particularly in the musculature, flanks, and facial features.
- The background elements—walls, straw, and floor—are rendered in looser, textured strokes, creating depth and atmosphere without pulling focus from the subject.
- The colour palette is rooted in realism: golden straw, faded wood tones, the cool turquoise of the blanket, and occasional brass and iron details provide harmony and visual richness.
Stylistically, the painting is in line with early Victorian sporting portraiture — grounded in classical composition and observational realism, yet full of personality and subtle storytelling. The gentle, directional light highlights the horse’s powerful form, while the surrounding stable environment is depicted with lived-in authenticity.
This is not just a portrait — it’s a narrative scene that pays homage to a racehorse of note, shown not in the heat of competition but at rest in the quiet dignity of his private quarters.

👨‍🎨 About The Artist – Samuel Spode (1798–1872)
Samuel Spode was a distinguished 19th-century British equestrian artist and grandson of the founder of Spode pottery. Though lesser known due to his commission-based practice, Spode produced a significant body of racehorse portraits, fox hunting scenes, and military horse depictions, including famous mounts like Copenhagen (Wellington’s horse at Waterloo) and Ronald (ridden by Lord Cardigan in the Charge of the Light Brigade).
His work appeared in The Sporting Magazine
Painted famous racehorses: Voltigeur, Birdcatcher, Caractacus
Most iconic piece: The Pinckney Family Coursing at Stonehenge
Auction records show sales reaching up to $53,125 USD
A passionate horseman himself, Spode combined his technical skill with real knowledge of the animals he painted, giving his works unmatched authenticity.
